my BT is now 11 months old and needs her coat stripping for the first time (although its still not very long). Can anyone suggest a good groomer in the Bristol area

thanks

How about doing it yourself Moo?
Its quite easy, or get in touch with her breeder to show you how to do it.

my breeder is away at the moment and as its her first stripping I thought I'd get her looking posh. Would like to learn how to do it though...

Maybe you could answer a BT coat question for me. Do their coats all grow at different rates? She is 11 months old and not very long haired, about an inch thick on her back and quite curly and she doesn't seem to have the long hair on the face that alot of other Borders have, is this just her age or could it be that she will never have those lovely old man whiskers that I've seen on other BT's

thanks

Moo, in my last litter I kept a dog who has a fabulous coat, I can just roll it over each month. His sister however has to have a total strip every 6 months and she grows so differently its amazing. neither does she have much whisker, whereas the brother has lots. I wouldnt risk a dog groomer doing her incase they clip her or make a mess of it. far better to get a border terrier person to do it instread. if your breeder is away its not the end of the world..just wait til he/she gets back. failing that there are some really good breeders in the bristol/somerset area...i am sure one of them would do it for you, I know mrs Moffat strips.

Moo,
Sams right let her breeder or another border person teach you to do her coat, I have trained as a dog groomer and now groom mainly show dogs - its a totally different approach. Most commercial groomers want to do the dog as quickly as possible and stripping properly takes time (more than is profitable at least). If they did agree to hand strip its quite likely that they would use a coat king - which you could use yourself. The thing about those who groom borders is that they will be able to identify the type of coat your dog has and will be able to help you to master the grooming and know the right tools for the job. It really is as easy as sam says. Good luck :)

Can only ech what Sam and Dill have said.
Yes the coats do differ, some lines can be very different to others, some coats grow very quickly, some don't.

hi moo I am actually a dog groomer by trade and also show and breed standard schnauzers I have been handstripping all breeds of dogs for years and love it I do seminars all over the country on stripping and trimming of pets I can understand you being worried about taking your border terrier to a groomer but there are a few out there that are like my self more than qualified to help and trim your pet to make it look as good as it can even to show standards the best thing is to ask if they do show them selves this way you know they are updating there standards and equipment by trying to be the best also ask what they show if you can find a groomer that handstripps there own dog which you can see before yours is done then you on your way to finding someone who can help if you still want help with her I can always offer my help I actually live in Bristol
