Whilst looking for a stud for my labrador bitch i have found out that one of her grandparents is a gpra carrier and it is likely that my bitch is tooo. I have now booked my bitch into the vets to have her eyes tested and to see about getting her tested to see if she is a carrier for gpra. (fingers crossed she isnt)
I am trying to research more into her lineage and any health defects, on her dams side. I have the hip scores and eye passes for her sires side, but not her dam. i said i am trying but have had no luck on finding anything, the only dog i can find is Rambo of Downfarm he is my dogs gt gt grand father, and from what i can work out was exported to either holland or germany, and un fortunely cannot under stand what is being said about him. This is the only dog i can find from her bloodlines if any one knows where i can find out more about her lines and health defects, please email at the following address

Your bitch may or may not be a carrier, and unless there is a Definitive DNA test available shortly you can only tell if the animal is affected.

Assuming her grandam was mated to a clear dog, then half the offspring will have been carriers, and half clear. You have no way of knowing which group her Dam fell into. If her Dam wqas a carrier, but sire clear then she has a 50/50 chance of being carrier or clear.

The only way you know a dog is a carrier, is if they have the bad luck to be mated (unknowingly) to another carrier, then there is a statistical probability that 1 in four pups would be affected, half carriers, and 1 in four clear.

All that breeders can do when a definate carrier is discovered is not to have that individual on both sides of future pedigrees, just in case both individuals although clinically unaffected, may be carriers.
