Hi all

Does anyone know if the UK KC are ever likely to entertain the JRT as a 'proper' breed? I am of course, not referring to the Parson Russell but it's slightly shorter and stockier cousin.

My dogs are registered with the Irish KC, who do recognise the JRT as distinct and seperate to the PRT, and I'd love to eventually show them in [and perhaps even move back to] the UK.

Thanks in advance

Hi,
I also own the shorter type JR's & i live in the UK & doubt the KC will ever register them as most of the JR's have no pedigree history & quite alot of them have different breeds in their background.
But saying that i don't know how they ever registered the PJRT because it too has other breeds in its background so too be fair both should have remained unregistered as they are classed as 'mongrels' or both should have been registered as PJRT's & JRT's.
I find it very unfair really as i to would love to be able to show mine at dog shows other than working terrier shows.
Bye
Jenny.

Hi Jenny

The way they've done it here in Ireland is to introduce an Interim Register [which my dogs are on].

When you register your first JRT with no pedigree it is classed as '1st Generation'...meaning it doesn't have any registered dogs at all in it's parentage. It has to undego 'assessment' by two recognised terrier judges, before being allowed to be registered.
When this dog produces/sires offspring, the pups are '2nd generation' JRT's, showing their immediate parents are registered. These dogs also need to be 'assessed' for 'type' before being allowed to be registered, despite having registered parents.
The '2nd generation' dog will produce '3rd generation' JRT's, which have two immediate generations of registered dogs behind it. As above, these dogs also have to under go the 'assessment' process before registration.
Finally, when the 3rd generation dog produces offspring, this offspring can be classed as having at least 3 generations of registered dogs in it's pedigree and as such can be put on the Proper JR register....you still with me? These dogs will be the first in the system to not require 'assessment' as it is deemed that with 30 or so 'assessed' and 'passed' dogs in it's immediate pedigree it must be the correct 'type'.
Dogs on the Interim register can have their own breed classes at shows, but are not supposed to go forward for Best in Group judging, nor can they earn green stars or CH titles. many JRT's (who win BoB) do go forward to group judging and are rarely thrown out of the ring, although ti is almost pointless as the judge cannot give it first prize whether it deserves it or not as they categorically can NOT go forward to Best in Show judging.
JRT's with three generations of registered parentage have all the showing rights that 'proper' breeds have.
Hope i haven't confused you too much, and I'm praying that the UK KC will see fit to acknowledge this breed in the near future.. ;o)

I think there is actually a move to regsiter 'jack russells' as has been done by (I think) the FCI. They are known as Australian Jack Russells and I think the recent move by the KC to reopen the PRT register is an attempt to get more of the long legged type registered as PRT rather than JT so the shorter legged type can be recognised. However, I believe that only those short legged type from Australia are going to be recognised as Australian Jack Russells and therefore all those short legged dogs referred to as Jack Russells in this country wont be eligible for registration in any event.
Besides its not up to the KC to 'recognise' breeds that is down to the individuals who own non recognised breeds to put their case forward to the KC for recognition.

So, technically, all of us over here with Irish KC registered JRT's could campaign to the UK KC to get our breed accepted by them?

Also, 'Australian Jack Russell'? The breed does not originate from Australia.....
Well, if that's the route they're going down I might invent the 'Irish West Highland Terrier' and campaign for its inclusion ;o)

As there are moves to register many newly created breeds feel free to create the Irish West Highland Terrier :D As long as the breed fulfils the KC regulations and requirements for a new breed then go for it!
