I would suggest contacting the Regional breed club for the breed yo7u are interested in. You can get details from the American Kennel Club.

If you then contact the secretary of the club, they may have a breeder/puppy list. Expect to be thoroughtly grilled, and you may find that many breeders will have quite restrictive enforceable contracts to protect the welfare of their pups.
