I've heard horror stories of people who buy puppies abroad and find out their breeders weren't reputable. I've checked with several sources including the kennel club and your sources at champdogs...is there a sure fire way to know if a breeder is reputable in the UK and Ireland? I'm going over in 3 weeks to look at Scotties---hoping to find a puppy to import. I'd appreciate your advice.
Thanks....Rose

Basically the puppies should be home reared, have their mother present, be clean and bright and generally look healthy. The parents should have the relevant health tests for their breed, check the certificates don't just accept it when people say it. If the peson has several different litters for sale of the same or different breeds then avoid them. Make sure the pups are registered with the Kennel Club, get this in writing if the paper work is not available.
Wish you well in your search.

I would also add that the best way in my mind is to go through the relevant breed club/s. If a breeder is a member of their breed club it is likely that they have more than a casual interest in their breed, and will also be bound by their clubs coed of ethics regarding breeding standards, eg age, number of litters, required health tests etc. Breed clubs will also be able to point out any known bad breeders puppy farmers known to them.
