Hello All,
Hope someone out there can give me some advice on which is the best book to get to help me train my 5 and a half month old Working Golden. There are so many book on the market it gets confusing. I just want to do it slowly and carefully, he comes when called, retreives his dummy, (most of the time!) and we have just started him on the whistle.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

PS Sorry John if you see this but had a "senior moment" and lost your email address, otherwise I would have emailed you direct.!

Kathryn.

I dont know any dedicated working Golden books I'm afraid but as a general type book I still like the late Susan Scales "Retriever Training"

The thing with Goldens is that you need rather more care with the average Golden compared with the average Labrador. They are rather more sensitive and are so much easier to shut down. A Lab will forgive a momentory laps but a Golden will go into it's shell and take a lot to build it's confidence up again.

If you ever want my email addy, if you click on my name you will find it in my profile.

Best wishes, John

Hi Kathryn,

I have the Susan Scales book. It was recommended to me by a Flatcoat person as a good read, easy to follow, and I agree with that. :) I also have Martin Deeley's "Working Gundogs - An Introduction to Training and Handling" which is also a good book with good diagrams to explain exercises, but it has too many spaniel photos in it (for us retriever lovers, that is!). :D

I prefer the first book personally, with its lovely photo section in the middle, of mainly Labradors! ;)

Best wishes,
Monty's Mum :)
