Hi there.
What would you recommend on housebreaking an IG puppy 10 weeks. old. I am home all day. Intended to use a crate..one hour.take him out to a small fenced enclosed poen area......praise him wen he goes..bring him in and give him some free time with us, and back to the crate for a while. I intend on repeating this daily until I see that he is catching on.
Does anyone have any more suggestions?
Thanks. margaret

Hi,

That sounds about right, out every hour, before and after every meal and make sure you give him a really tasty treat and give him a command for going.

Some toy dogs can be difficult to housetrain, a friend of ours has IG's and sometimes has real problems with the boys!!

Be patient and never get cross when he has an accident and remember to clean up all the accidents with something that is specially made to remove the odour, or he will pee there again.

Good luck :)

I have IG's and yes, they are difficult to housetrain! I didn't believe friends who told me before I got them how frustrating they can be, thinking I could housetrain anything with patience and perseverance! How wrong I was!
The trouble is, they don't seem to care about being clean, like other dogs do. If my Whippet had an 'accident'- which he never has since he was a puppy, he would be mortified. If my IG's did, they would just look at you as you tell them off as if to say 'so I peed on the doormat- get over it' before carrying on their merry way!
In fact, my dog is actually cleaner than the bitches- he can go for long periods without going, whereas the bitches need to go more often and WILL NOT go out in the rain!
I think a cage would be a good idea to use for training- none of mine have ever soiled in a crate, and take them out to the loo before and after playing, feeding, sleeping etc etc.
Good luck- in spite of the housetraining problems, I bet you'll still want another one, they are a bit addictive!
