Its a product that tightens the sphincter muscles to the bladder so they don't leak. I've been looking into this as I may have a problem too. I have found that cheese may assist as this contains high levels of an amino acid that converts to neropinephrine (I think that's correct) which is one of the chemicals that helps with this muscle tightening. So I may give that a go as an 'alternative' but haven't a clue as to dosage!

Hi
I had a Dobe bitch who took propalin for about 6 years. They need regular check ups - about every three months as it can be harmful to the heart. The dose depends on the dogs weight as with most drugs. My vet recemmended a dose but I could get away with giving her much less until she got older. It does work but you have to go to the vets.

Hi
My eldest bitch was prescribed Propalin last year, when I noticed she had started to leak.
However, I never gave it to her, as I was convinced that, in her case, it was not a medical problem, but more that she was getting lazy and putting off going out for a wee!! Consequently, her bladder was overflowing.
It seems my hunch was right, because during the last 12 months, we have had 2 new puppies and had to go through the " every half hour toileting" routine. While we were encouraging the pups to go out and get clean, with the enticement of treats ! the oldie has also been going in and out with them, and has sort of re-trained herself.
Apart from a bad weekend last week, when we took all the dogs away for a few days, and she point blank refused to go out in a strange place to wee, and therefore reverted to "leaking", she has been clean.
Anyway, sorry to stray from your question, but I have a bottle of Propalin here, unopened, and the dosage instructions are 3 drops per 4kg bodyweight once a day, or 1 drop per 2 kg bodyweight three times a day, orally with food.
The warnings on the pack say "it can cause aggressiveness and restlessness. It may not be suitable for some animals"; it may overstimulate the nervous system...and headaches, dizziness and hypertension have been reported in humans taking it!! It also says that it could have a laxative effect.
Depending on where you live, I think you can buy this without prescription, but in the UK it's only available through your vet.
In view of the side effects listed, I certainly wouldn't use it without it being prescribed by a vet, and in fact, even though my vet DID prescribe it, and I paid £15 for it, as I said, I chose not to use it.!!

Hi Gwen,
My Rough Collie girl had Propalin, and it was very effective for a while and although can't guarantee yours would be the same, she suffered no side effects. However, it seems to lose effectiveness after a period of time - as your girl is 14, you may find she's fine on it for as long as it's needed (sorry :( ).
You could also talk to your vet about a tablet called Incurin? - cheaper than Propalin, one small tablet a day and in my girl's case it was very effective.
Hope that helps, enjoy your girl's old age, they're such characters aren't they. Got my old girl through to almost 16 years of age, I'd had her since I was 16 myself and couldn't imagine being without her, sniff - a dog in a million.
