Hello, I am a dog lover and owner. I am not a breeder. In the past I have owned such dogs as the English
Springer Spaniel, 2 Parsons Jack Russell Terriers, and Now a Large Patterdale terrier. I love the small muscular breeds.
I like dogs with short hair. My dog now is a year old and he weighs 27lbs. I recently relocated and am willing to get
another dog. The only problem is I want a dog the same size? I also want this new dog to be able to keep up with
the Patterdale. I realized that there are really no dogs with short hair, and very energetic in this size range. So I have
been doing some research. There are new dog breeds or cross breeds of some kind outh there that seem pretty
interesting.
I have been in contact with 3 mini bulldog breeders who claim that their dogs do not weigh over 30lbs. I have been
in contact with a man who claims to breed mini dalmations. I have heard of such dogs as the carlin pinscher which is a
cross between a pug and a min pin. I have been in contact with a man who claims to sell a dog breed called the
puggle or the mini mastiff this breed is a cross between the pug and the beagle.
I would love to see some of these dogs because they do sound interesting but the prices are outragious. I am
searching for a companion which will be able to keep up with our active lifestyle. Please let me know your thoughts on
these breeds and cross breeds, and what type of dog might work out with my patterdale and I.

Hi Tom, my only worry with these crosses is that you will never know how the pup is going to turn out. Whether it'll look like mum, dad, a bit of both, or maybe neither! Is it a risk you want to take?
I'm afraid I'm not really into the smaller breeds so I have no suggestions for you, but I hope you find a suitable companion.

Thak goodness I am in no hurry to get another dog but would love one within a year. I honestly cant find a thing. I was recently on another website that was arguing that they are breeding mini rottweilers using a mix of dogs, such as the patterdale terrier(black), the pug(black), the german pinscher(rust), french bulldog(black) and possibly the boston terrier. and the miniature pinscher.
Tom

Hi,
I can tell you with complete confidence that there is
no such breed as a mini dalmatian.
There are runts, and weedy, badly-bred dalmatians....but nobody in their right mind would want to pay a lot of money for that!
PS - as for 'silly' prices...I personally wouldn't pay more than £100 ($150 if you're across the pond) for
any crossbreed.

I don't believe it.
Where is the scale-rule in the photo? Where is the picture of one beside a normal dal?

It could possibly be a midget, you do occasionally get genetic oddities in all species (just think of Mini-Me!! - no offence intended) but I don't believe they've got a whole line breeding true which is what they'd need to call it a breed.
What weedy legs and head it has!

I don't believe, either, that they are actually pure bred 'small' Dalmatians but have had an input of something else to reduce the size as quickly as they have.

Over here some less desirable breeders like to take the peanuts from a litter and breed from those. They like to sell them for big bucks and describe them as a rarity. Minature shelties. What a load of rubbish (Ithink you would say). Makes me incrediable mad. I get people calling me often for these really small shelties. Ugh, the time it takes to explain to them that there are no minature shelties!

JG - have you seen the Mini-Dalmatian Nursery? Its black and white (how original) all the way down to the tiles.... I bet you want one now don't you??! NOT!
Mini-dalmatians... my *&$%

How about a miniture Bull terrier. Seen one on the dogshow on t.v on saturday night. Cute little dogs, short hair, and muscular with an attitude. I like them any how. Don't see much of a difference between them and the standard.

Hi Chloe,
Last time I saw a building like that was when I was investigating a commercial dal breeder. Bad Karma associated with twee bad taste like that! :)

Looking at the photos - the perspective seems all wrong, especially the photo of the Dalmation next to the mini Dalmation. Hmm, something strange definitely afoot!

I have a cross Dalmation x Bassett Hound. We went to look at him when buying my husband a dog when he lost his beloved Jack Russell. When we got to the kennels (which are now closed down!) they said that the mating was an 'accident'. I don't know about that. George (as we call him) was very skinny and pathetic, we bought him more as a rescue getsture. Now aged 6, he can't walk very far as he gets pains in his joints and starts to limp. He has a solid heavy body (white with black spots) He has the legs of a Bassett but they are longer are slightly spindly like a Dalmation. I believe he is the result of meddling with the breeds for profit. We love him to bits; he is beautiful and comical with a super nature but he is not a good combination I am worried that as he gets old he will have lots of problems with his joints. I personally think that crossing dogs is a difficult buisness and the resultant breed needs many generations of trials to see what problems may arise. I realise that many breeds like the Dobermann are the result of trials. This however has developed over the years and there is now a breed standard.

Boston terriers are small muscular dogs do not weigh more then 25 pounds there are 3 weight groups.
There is also the French bulldog they are small muscular dogs as well and should not weigh more then 28 pounds.
Then the english bulldog I believe around 55 pounds or so (I have never heard of a miniture english bulldog)
All these dogs are small short haired muscular breeds. I find the boston to be the most active. I have also noticed a different look in the boston as well. My female is more bulldog she has a real pushed in face, and more stocky muscular type body. Where my male has a little muzzle and is pretty skinny but muscular. I have my male in agility and he just loves it, he is very active too just loves to go and he is fast.

I had heard that the bostons had breathing problems? And that they tend to get heat strokes easily?
Tom

P.E.Dog,
Brach breeds can have breathing problems (like the Peke, Englishbulldog, French bulldog, Boxer, ect. I would think any Brach breed can have breathing problems and suffer heat stroke easy.) I have never had this problem with mine. I have mentioned in my post that I have noticed there is a different look in the breed. Some with a longer muzzle and not as flat. My female's muzzle is almost as flat as a Peke but has a little nose to her. Where as my male has a little snout I could actually get a muzzle on him if I wanted to. He is more slender with a muscular body, thats why I have him in agility (am thinking on putting my female in flyball), the heat does not seem to bug him or my other Bt they love to run. My female does snort more but that is because her face is so flat. Where my other 3 don't. Just like any dog I don't take them for walks in really hot days I either go early morning or evening when it has cooled down. If we do go out walking when it is really hot I carry water and a cloth so I can cool them down.
I was just stating small muscular dogs and that is the only one's I came up with.

Why don't you get another Patterdale?

Tom,
Just a thought, but have you tried rescue centres?
There's a good chance you'd find a small, muscular,shorthaired,active crossbreed.
Then, not only would you have the perfect friend for you and your dog....you'd also be helping out by giving a good home to one of the thousands of dogs in need of one!
Take care :D

I love the patterdale breed but my male is huge and just a year old. He was 27lbs last i checked and the vet said that he would probably get a little bigger and may fill out more. So I am looking at a 30lb patterdale terrier. I also have tried kennels and have come up empty. I was thinking maybe a basenji but not sure how they are? I was also thinking of a staffordshire terrier but not sure how they are around other dogs? It would also have to be a small staff you know the runt of the litter. Anyone else have any suggestions?

I wouldn't suggest you get a male of ANY breed if your Patterdale is male. You are correct, he is way too big for his breed. Why not just go to a strays kennels and see if there is something there.
Dawn.

He's certainly huge for a Patterdale! (Are you certain there's not another breed slipped in there?!) Looking up details of Basenjis, the males (possibly not a good idea if your male is entire) wiegh in at 24lb, and the bitches 22lb, so they might be too small for you. A small male staffy (not a runt) would be about 28lb (up to 38lb is acceptable according to the Standard) with bitches 24 - 34lb. Perhaps you could look along those lines?

hi dollface
there is such things as the miniture english bulldog.
the englishbull did come in 3 sizes but they only come in 2 now the miniture 30 lb and under and then the nomall size, the third size was in the mibble
Natalie

There's no such breed as the "Miniature English Bulldog" recognised by the UK Kennel Club, nor according to my US published Canine Encyclopaedia, the American, Canadian, Australian, United Kennel Clubs or the FCI.
The only Bulldog (also sometimes known as the English Bulldog, or British Bulldog) can be from 12 - 14 inches high, and between 44 - 55 lbs.
There's no mention anywhere of any other size.

Natalie,
Can't find my post where I stated about miniture english bulldogs? If someone can help me on that one :) (it sounds more like the frenchy)
I remember saying, Boston, Frenchies, englishbulldogs, miniture bull terrier.
Ya I have never heard Of a miniture english bulldog, I even checked the encyclopedia and the net. If u find any please post the site I would really like to see them :)
How about a mini pin they are cute little dogs too :)

Hello,
Well i'm glad someone else has a dog thats supposed to be small but has turned out a 'super heavy weight':D My mini schnauzer is well more than he should be anyway hes definately no mini! He was last weighed in January and is 28lb but hes isn't fat just solid with muscle the vet says he is double muscled (i've only ever seen that in bull breeds) & to think i bred him purposely for show 4 years ago & he was the tinyest baby youv'e ever seen, he done really well until about 12 months then went overheight by 1" & started tanking out too much.
Why don't you look at getting a mini schnauzer they will run the legs off your patterdale & can stick up for themselves too if need arises, mine run with 2 mini jack russels & there is no problems at all I have 3 entire males (one of each colour b/s p/s & b) & 2 entire girls all living quite happily together.
Only problem is they have longish coats but don't shed though must be clipped or stripped 2-3 times a year depending on hair growth rate.
Happy hunting
Jenny.

Thanks everyone for your information and help. I am still looking and will probably go with a mixed breed of some type. I have seen 3 different websites for the mini bull dog one was in australia and another was with a wolfdog breeder, not sure where I saw the third one though. I was told I should get a female but I honestly dont want one I just happen to like male dogs better. And my patterdale is well socialized and we go to the doggy park every chance we get.

Hi Tom
I think it's great that youre thinking of a crossbreed - my favourite type of dog. I was also a bigger fan of male dogs, until my old greyhound girl swayed my decision! Dont rule out a female - they make just as wonderful, loving companions - and it'll be easier to introduce a female to the pack. Even the best socialised male doesn't necessarily take to another dog to "compete" with in the pack ranking. Whatever you decide, best of luck!
Take care
Kathy
