It depends on the breed, on whether it is a dog or a bitch.....

As a general rule, bitches shouldn't be mated before they are 2 years old.

Just as a matter of interest, like how we have the guide lines for the mating of bitches is there a minimum age that a dog should not be used before?

That's what I was thinking, but I'm sure it happens before! It's not so easy to check on with a dog unlike a bitch because in the Breeds Records Supplement that the Kennel Club issues it only lists the bitches date of birth not the dogs But I did wonder if a dog was used early would it affect him in any way, like stunt his growth or something?

Yes it does happen- not even sure if he KC disallows it anymore .
I think the correct age is at least over 18 months , preferably 2 years . probably affect the bitch more as she has all the hard work :(

I thought it had to be at least 12 months old for the stud?

I rang the kennel club about the age range for stud dogs (actually finding out if there was a upper age limit) and they said there were no rules for Dogs if they were physically capable then the resulting pus could be registered!
