Topic Dog Boards / General / Roughly what size collar for dobie pup?
- By Jo19 [gb] Date 16.05.03 12:03 UTC
I wonder if any of you lovely dobie owners out there could give me an idea of what size collar I should get for my dobie pup, and roughly how many other collars he's going to need before he's fully grown? I could ask the breeder of course but I've plagued him with so many phone calls I'm worried he's going to think I'm stalking him.

I only ask because I've found this fab site with these designer collars and I'm wondering whether I can justify getting a couple for him to "grown into". Money's burning a hole in my pocket and the wait is getting to me!

Which has just reminded me - Kerioak - I'm seeing the breeder on Sunday again hopefully so will pass on your query.

Hi Jo

Get which ever collars you like and then let him grow into them :) - I have one bitch who still has the collar I first put on them as a tiny pup (it was a bit big), others have needed a bigger one as they have grown or worn out.

Hi Jo,

17 weeks and we are into our 3rd collar!!! and with the last one i missed out a size. It was very loose for about a week and a half but she's grown into it now and it should see her through now to when her chain will fit her as I like to keep a check chain on. I could buy small chains and have previously with my other dobes, but must have given them away, foolishly, as I dont have them now.

Hi Bev,
Please don't leave a check chain on your dog as a normal collar. This is not what they're designed for, they're a training aid if used correctly, but a life-threatening hazard otherwise.

Hi,
Really i never knew that, I have used them on both my other dobes, without problem I must add. However, I definitely wont now if thats the case. Can you tell me what can happen please. No-one has ever made me aware of this before. I am so glad you have told me. I just thought that a nice silver chain around a dobes neck looks much nicer than a regular collar.
Bev
Edited to say. I do know the correct way to put one on by the way.

It's just that, unattended, a check chain can easily catch in something, which is when they become 'choke chains'.

Dogs have died this way. Please don't risk yours.

Thanks Jeangenie, I will take note of this. When we moved into the country I stopped putting the collars on the dogs, except when we walked, as neither would leave the garden anyway and they were both chipped. I plan on getting Taz chipped in a couple of weeks, but as she is a puppy and could escape, she wears a collar at all times, except through the night and when i have to leave her alone, as i am worried it could snag on something silly like the radiator pipes or if she jumped up at the door handles.
