My Jack terrier didn't start nesting at all. No digging or anything of the like. Just lay in her cupboard waiting for it to happen. As for the paper and bits, sorry, but of no idea. Maybe when she has whelped and while you are taking her for her first pee, you could get someone with you (hopefully) to put an old sheet or something else of yours under the pups. Just a thought. Hope all goes well for sunday!

Hi, how about using carpeting? If you have or buy cheaply some pieces of carpet could cut to the size of the cupboard and nail down with large headed stair carpet tacks ( they are easier to get out with a claw hammer than nails with no head), this would at least give the pups some grip when they move about and help keep them warm. I would spend a couple of evenings shredding lots of newspapers into a cardboard box so that when she is actually producing a puppy you could put in handfuls to soak up the fluids. Once she is actually producing puppies I wouldnt think she will mind. As she will clean the puppies and consume their waste for a couple of weeks a clean carpet, replaced every couple of days while she is out for a short walk, would stay hygenic enough - better than nothing anyway. If she manages to scraoe this up then you could put triangular battening round the edges over the carpet to prevent her tearing it up. I am assuming this cubby hole will be big enough for her and the puppies at least to begin with. Once they are all born she may be more compliant and be happy with the puppies in the place you would prefer.

My dog doesn't like the newspaper either so each day when done reading the paper we run it through our shredder and we have a WHOLEEEE 13 gal trash can of shredded PLUS a stack of papers to shredd when that's empty OYYYY
We are kind of waiting to see what happens here too---temp is at 99.6 today---so gonna take it again in two hours--she also keeps hiding under my comforter HEHE
