I have just read the front page of our local paper.A woman was walking her Bulldog in a local park when she was slashed with a knife by someone wanting to steal the dog.The poor woman is still in hospital and it didn't say wether or not they got the dog but the story was covering the crimewatch reconstruction so should be on the next crimewatch on BBC.
I know this is something that does happen but being close to home it is so scary!!I have been reading a few threads recently about Bulldogs and how expensive they are.The threads did get a bit heated and we never did find out why they cost 3 times as much as most other similer dogs ,but I wonder if bulldogs are being targeted because of this?
I never leave my dog outside a shop etc but I think I will be extra careful in our local parks now!!

I was told (by bulldog breeders when I was thinking about getting one but got Bostons instead)that bulldogs cost more because of artificial insemination and c-sections, and also u have to put the pups on the mother every 2 to 3 hrs to feed (can't leave them with her). Very expensive dog to breed, the reason for artificial insemination is because the males are more likely to have a heart attack when breeding they over exurt themselves. :(

Not in UK they don't, because AI is used very very rarely due to KC rules.

Is it true that their life expectancy is 5 years?

Bulldogs life expectancy is about 8 years. But I know of some veterans who have reached the grand old age of 13

I know you are just sharing what you have heard also so my comments are not directed at you :-)

My reply is off the original post so sorry and I to replied to the last one but

the arguement for the price of these puppies in my opinion is not founded, I have just commented on the puppies stolen reported on SKY.

Most people that I personally know never leave puppies unattended for 3-4 weeks, we slept with our puppies and mother for the full first 3 weeks and I mean never left them for 1 min. My husband and I took 4 weeks holidays between us.

AI , although I know nothing about it read a thread on here that a meat baster is or can be used, and the male dogs spearm is collect by the owner ( sorry) so I still can't understand where some of the figures come from.

I called my vet out 2 times during the nighyt (emergency time) for things that I felt were an emergency and it was not cheap but surely any good breeder would expect and be prepared for this and not pass these additional costs onto a purchaser or at least expect it.

My mind boggles :-)

In the case of Sandy Platts puppies her prices will be nothing to do with the difficulty of welping or rearing, cockers are not a diffucult breed in that sense. She has earned her prices by years of hard work and a talent for getting it right. Now how come in something like football to command a huge reward for talent (perhaps not even hard work :)) its OK but not for something like dog breeding. But really what she achieves from her puppy sales are her business aren't they?These puppies were hand reared so I doubt they spent much of their early weeks alone but they are now 10 weeks and if they are destined to be kennel dogs I don't think there is anything wrong in them being out in kennels together.

I know nothing about the Lady you mention so my comments were not directed at her just the general price of puppies or the reason for the amounts.

I Honestly do think people who do their work and get it right do merit higher prices and have said so many times on the board. Not sure about some of the figures.

What I guess I am saying that reasons for higher prices IMHO are not ones of complcations of labour, or time spent watching the pups etc that is what any breeder should be prepaid to do.

How awful, I can-t believe that people would do such a thing.
I have two and am very careful to watch them at all times as I am aware of people stealing dogs etc but I have never heard of anyone being mugged for their dog.

Further to the misconception that bulldogs are atificially inseminated, contrary to belief bulldogs can be quite fit, my dogs love nothing more than a walk in the woods, as long as it is not too hot and they have plenty of water.

that is horrible,i dread to think what this poor lady is going through and i really do hope that she gets her dog back.
i have a friend last year who brought a rottwieler (spelling) he had only had it 10 days and thieves broke into his house and took his pup along with its pedigree papers.
so i dread to think the kind of hands it is in,and then previous to that my grandmothers sister (although i am going back 5 years ago now) her house was broken into and she had a 13 week old sammoyd(spelling) and the burgalars killed her puppy.
the world sure is becoming a hateful place with regards what happens to children and animals.

There a story in the West Midlands a few weeks ago where a young lad about 14/15 was walking the family dog a Dalmation the dog was on an extending lead (I hope I recall this correctly) a man jumped out from a car cut the lead and dragged the dog back into the car. Leaving the lad totally shaken and bemused.

All he could say was two man in a red escort.

The car had passed him a few times during the walk but he thought nothing of it as it's a residential street!!! and thought the driver was just looking for an address.

As far as I know the dog was never recovered or at least it's not being reported if he has.

Makes you seriously think doesn't it.

That could have been "Domino" - snatched in similar circumstaces in the Birmingham area - he was "sold in the pub that same evening and returned to his owner, because of all the publicity - posters, local radio etc."

You are right just asked the "better half" I suppose he has his uses, like now. He said the dog was got back due to the unprecedented publicity following his theft.

It's enough to make me scared to walk my dog!

I know!!Is there any other breed of dog that is worth this much and do the owners need to be aware of this happening?I have a Boxer and although they are averagely priced compared with some other breeds I will be very careful when I take him out(which will be in just a week,can't wait!!).With my last Boxer I always felt safe even though he was the softest dog going but anyone who didn't know him didn't know that!!

You must have missed the message board dated 02:05:03 titled "£20,000" for a dog. Thai Ridgebacks cost up to £20K. People seem to pay these prices because there are waiting lists for them. God knows where they walk them?
