I took my 14yr old Goldie to the vets yesterday for her jabs, however over the weekend, I'd noticed she was holding her head to the left hand side and seemed a bit wobbly on her legs.
The Vet noticed this as soon as we walked in, and gave her a really thorough check-over, but could only say it may be an inner ear infection, even though she could see nothing when she checked her ears :( She also looked at her teeth and said that for her age they weren't too bad.
She decided not to give her her jabs incase her immune system was working overtime to sort out any possible infection and told me to keep a close eye on her.
Anybody had any similar problems with their pooch ?

My 1 year old spaniel had some slight side effects from her medication, but the vet said to keep an eye on her and in a day or so they cleared up. maybe ask for a second opinion if your dog is the same in a few days time. is your dog eating ok? that's usually a good indicator if they are feeling well or not!

Hi,
One of our old beardies, had a small stroke when he was about 13 years old (ish - going back quite a few years now) and had a permenant tilt to one side, it definately affected his balance slightly, but he had no other problems, apart from looking a bit strange and lived until he was almost 17 years old.
As long as she seems fine and doesn't bother with it, I wouldn't worry too much.

Liberty, have a look at this [link http://www.champdogs.co.uk/cgi-bin/board/topic_show.pl?tid=8812&hilite=vestibular#48804]thread[/link]. My Nellie is now 14 and although quite frail shows no signs now of her IVE.

I am pleased your vet decided not to give her the jabs.I don't make my oldies have them. I think there is more risk having them when they are old than not.I lost one of my old girls to liver cancer five months after refusing to let her have a jab.My vet said that with hindsight she agreed it was the right decision because the jabs would have been too much for her and I would have lost those precious extra months.
Hope all goes well.At 14 she is bound to have some wobbly days. I think that is about 98 in human terms! I'm not nearly that old but I do a good line in wobbling when I'm got out of bed in the early hours because someone needs a quick trip to the garden.

Its a toss up really with the old ones isn't it :) I recently boostered Nellie after a long discussion with my vet, as we have a home in a holiday area she could come into contact with dogs from many different areas therefore we felt the risk for her was perhaps higher than some she seemed in good enough condition to have it but I am sure she would not survive if she picked anything up. My vet is always very honest with me, and admits at her age she probably would not create that many antibodies but we still felt the balance was in favour of having her done. She was absolutely fine after the injection but then she has never shown any serious reaction to it.
I agree with Carrie that your vet is to be commended for not giving the jabs. Vaccinations should not be given to dogs whose immune systems might already be fighting against stress, illness or even just old age.
I hope your dog does OK.

Thanks everyone for you replies,I also found the Link very useful :)
Bree has been much brighter over the last couple of days and is tucking into her food with gusto, and she only seems to cock her head occasionaly :D
So all in all she seems much better.
