My 14 wk male Golden is refusing eat his food.He is being fed on Pedigree Chum
Advance puppy Complete which my breeder had weaned him on 2 meals day of
this plus one meal of rice pudding or boiled egg mid-day again 10pm.
When he refused I just picked the bowl up after 20 mins and gave it back at the next meal time.
He refused again and we carried on 48hrs to no avail.I tried mixing some puppy
meat to tempt him,he would take a couple mouthfuls thats it.
I don't really want to start messing around with his food.
Its now been 5 days just a couple of mouthful here and there. He is in good conition
and iv'e just tried the Enervite had it 48hrs noticed no difference yet.
As he is a growing puppy how can I get him to eat.Any suggestions????
I know he won't starve himself on the otherhand I don't want him to lose weight and condition.
Hes happy and plays with my other Golden.
Thanks in advance Briony.

I'm not sure I can help much - I am a puppy novice, and haven't got to the 14 wk stage yet, Dylan is only 8 weeks at the moment. However, I read somewhere (can't remember where but it was a messageboard somewhere) that its common for pups to lose their appetite at around this stage. I have no suggestions, except to say that I think its normal. Sorry I cant help more!

It's amazing just how often this happens and how annoying it must be for the owners of the puppies. Have you tried all the usual stuff like tuna, a little roast chicken rubbed into his food and I found that my puppies and adults would do loop the loop for corned beef. I just rubbed it into their dog meal and hey presto they wolfed it down. The last thing you want is a fussy puppy, but saying that there is nothing more soul destroying than to put down good food and watch your young puppy walk away. I wish I had the answer for you, but you are not alone in this problem.

If he likes cat food try a small tin of Pilchards. The ones in tomato sauce, not the ones in brine! You can add just a little to the food to give it a nice smell so a small tim will last several meals.
My dogs always get a tin of Pilchards every Sunday! The oil is good for both coat and joints.

Briony, My pup went off eating for a few weeks when we got him, would just pick at his food. Apparently males without te competition seem to be picky eaters. I was advised to feed him pedigree buscuits soaled in water and mix in some tin pedigree puppy food. I never bothered about picking it up I just left it for him to eat when he wanted to. I didnt want him to loose to much weight (he's a dobe) so decided to leave it for him to help himself. Occasionally I would mix in cat food pouch with his bics and he would eat most of it. I have also tried pilchards, sardines but he still ate when he felt like it.
He is finally eating fairly regularly 3 times a day. He usually eats it in two sittings though. It is frustrating and not everyone would agree with my methods, but he is a nice weight and eating well now.
Best of luck with your pup Im sure that as he gets older his appetite will pick up.

Thanks,it appears to be quite common prolem, if I left it down all the time the other
Golden would eat it.

My elderly dog has had a jaded appetite lately, if she was younger I would just sit it out but like the very young I don't think you can do that with the old. she's a bag of bones anyway. I have been buying frozen colley fillets, 2 1/2 mins in the micro, mashed up, and stirred in with the juices to her Beta Senior. Doing the job nicely, they come in small blocks of 6, one block does her evening meal and enough left over for reheating for breakfast.

Feel like a bit of a blonde bimbo here (!) but can I ask what colley fillets are ? It's just that I have never heard of them.

The cheapest white fish you can get, because of my terriers digestive history I cant give oily fish. Actually it smells quite nice when it is cooking and looks better than some bits of haddock I've seen :) Sainsburys and Asda sell it in packets of 4 or 6 small blocks.

PS If you really are a Blonde Bimbo, I doubt you will ever have to worry about cheap food :D

Do you soak the meal ? Try putting a small amount of water onto in, stick it in the microwave for a minute or so and let the smell and flavour come through - its worth a try !

Hi , yes we always soak the meal.Hes gradually come round to Hills science now which is what I prefer to feed.
He was on Pedigree Advance it was after afew weeks he started to turn his nose up at just about everything.
Hes now decided to eat,so hopefully he will be fine now.
Thanks for the advice,
Briony :-)
