Hi

I have a 9 month old Basset Puppy who is totally housetrained in my house but when I visit my parents he sometimes walks along and wees at the same time leaving a zigzag trail over there brand new carpet! Ooops! Does anyone know why he does this? He goes out to wee in the garden so it's not like he needs to go. Is he marking? I'm having him castrated soon so do you think that may stop it?

Hello,

Sometimes dogs do this as a dominance/marking thing, to spread their scent as far as possible. I wouldn't think castration would help in this respect and I would recomend you wait until he is over the year and as close to 18 months as possible, so he can fully mature being such a large breed.

Bassets may be small in size, but they are a large dog with short legs and need time for their joints and body to mature properly, or you could have a gangly looking adult.

Does he do this wee walking outside, maybe he has a problem with his hips and cannot squat or lift his leg properly?

Hi, I've had this problem with several pups and young dogs over the years. Don't worry, it is a nuisance, especially on carpets, but they do grow out of it. I have found it to be caused by excitement or apprehension. One of my dogs used to get so excited and fussy when you got home that she lost control and would leave a little trail. Try getting your folks to go outside to meet your pup and let her get the excitement over and done with outside. I also had a Beardie that did it every time we went to training class until he was about a year. He really enjoyed the classes, but no matter how many lamp posts we had watered before we got there, he had more. I usd to collect the mop as I walked through the door!! Another dog I had peed on the move when meeting dogs. They have all grown out of it and I am sure your Basset will. Try to be reassuring and keep calm so as not to get the pup over excited.
