Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any experience in telling a pseudo pregnancy apart from a genuine pregnancy?

The young lady concerned started her season 1st April. She wasn’t mated and the season eventually went away and she was then allowed to mix with the male dogs who showed no interest in her at all.

When she was at day 27 she developed an open pyometra (diagnosed by the vet using ultrasound scanning & by the discharge produced). This was treated with antibiotics and all seemed OK. A further two check up scans showed all was well and neither showed any sign of pregnancy at all. The last scan being done when she could have been 27+ days in whelp (if mated!).

This young lady has very pink and enlarged nipples. Mammary development around the nipples. She has lost all her hair on her abdomen. She has a very large vulva and signs of a clear mucous discharge. Otherwise she is fit and well, eating normally etc. etc.

Any advice you could give me would be really appreciated. I’m driving myself mad with curiosity/worry. Thanks.

Hi,

I would have thought the scans would have showed something, even a very small something. Usually scans are done later in the pregnancy as they show more.

All you can do is wait and see, if she is pregnant, you should be able to feel them start moving the closer to the 9 weeks she gets (as long as she has more than 1)
