Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Which lead for a Dobie?
- By JackyandSydney [gb] Date 13.05.03 14:19 UTC
Can some one please advise me what sort of show lead is suitable for a Dobermann pup (16 weeks and growing). My ringcraft class instructors weren’t sure they thought a lead with a chain on it.

Any help would be appreciated in where I can buy a lead (none of my local pet shops have anything) and how it should be used when training and showing a Dobie.

Hi a thin black leather lead with a fine chain is what you need :-)

Hi Jacky

Dobermanns are traditionally shown on a thin black leather lead and a long thin chain that, when they are well behaved enough to free stack is put low on their necks, almost on their shoulders. If you email me I will try to find some photos of Dobes show like this that I can point you in the direction of.

If you have a Dobe (please not Dobie they are too elegant for this diminutive :) ) that is not this well behaved then again a black (if your dog is black) leather lead and a black leather or nylon collar which can be taken high behind the ears to give more control (if you use this method be careful - do not yank your dog around on it.)

I have never seen these thin chain collars in pet shops but you will almost always find them at the larger open or championship shows

Most people put the show collars/leads on just before they go in the ring so that they are not walked around the showground like this.

Thanks Storm and Christine for your replies.

I have tried to place Sydney collar high on his neck but it always slips down, I dont want to tighten it or he might choke the little begger. Ill have to try and get to a champ show and buy one soon.

Ill try not to use dobie from now on christine, guess is just my aussie coming out in my writing.

This company have a catalogue and do mail order http://www.luxway.freeserve.co.uk/.

Deva are well respected for their chain ware, but I don't know if they have a website.

Alternatively get to the Championship show early and buy one before going in the ring, as these show collars and leads are sold on trade stands at the shows.

Kerioak - what colour lead should a brown dobe be shown in? Black, or tan?

Thnks

I've seen dobes at shows wearing these - they do look mighty posh in them. Don't think I've seen the high neck ones yet.

I'd consider buying Hugo one if a) I ever took him to shows and b) he had a personality transplant and tried, just once, to behave himself. Would look nice in an enlarged photo on my wall though...
