- By EMMA DANBURY [gb] Date 13.05.03 11:30 UTC
is there any safe method of transporting a full size boxer apart from in the boot with dog guard or crate. is there a type of restraint on the market for dogs on the back seat.

Yes you can buy a harness that attaches to the seat belt.

excellent that saves me buying a new car.

Yes there is something that is like a harness that clips into the seatbelt.
Not sure how much it is etc.
HOWEVER, having personal experience with Boxers (I have 2 at the mo)
I'd go for a dog cage/crate in the boot, why??
Well some are very good chewers!! and speaking from personal experience
with just the rear seat and tailgate guard my youngest dog whose now nearing 2 y.o.
decided she'd re-model the headlining in the car. (Luckily for me the car wasn't a new one, phew)
One Boxer I knew chewed the back out of the seats and another chewed through the
wires in the back of the boot, so they had no lights (eek)
Car cage's much safer for all concerned and less costly in the long run too :)
If you get a car cage make sure it has the rear escape doors too.
You can sometimes pick car cages up second hand in the free-ads or the dog papers.
If you have the dog sat on the back seats they can normally reach the door handles...
easily chewed as another Boxer owner found out!
Kind Regards

how big would the crate have to be for the boxer. id imagine it would not fit in peugeot 106 boot, would a boxer for that mater. its just i intend to take the new addition to the family with me everywhere i go. i don't go to far either 10 miles probably the very most.

I've always worried about putting my dog in the boot because the boot on car is designed to be a crumple zone in the event of a crash.

So mine travels with a harness on the back seat!!

Just remember with using a harness(and I have one), that if you have to leave your pup in the car even for 5 mins, significant chewing can occur! My dog was happier and safer in the back, crated as in the initial stages they dont liketo be left. Now that she is used to it i can use either.

i have a harness for my dog (as you said the boot is a crumple zone!) so i seatbelt mine in, they can lie down and sleep or sit up and look around. Depends on the size of breed of course but if i have to leave my dog in for a short time i undo him so he does not get tangled or stressed, usually he goes to sleep on the floor :)

Some dogs manage to tread on their seat belt and undo the harness, but there is an American one recommended by Wendy J on here (have seen it, very good) that has a swivel attachment and is sooo much better.

Also, there is now a sort of hammock arrangement available from one of the mail order companies which fills up the gap between the front seat and back seat so that it is more comfortable for a large dog....sorry I am so vague today, can't remember which company it is, might be Over The Top or one similar....

I think that if your car is involved in anything more than a minor shunt, the safest thing for a dog is to be in a cage.
