Can anyone tell me on average how many champions you should find on the 5 generation pedigree. Thanks

Depends on the breed. some breeds do not have Championship status in the UK, so any Champions will normally be those abroad behind imported stock, or when the dog is shown abroad.

You should expect a sprinkling of them in each generation, but some of the best producers are not champions, and some of the best Champions never produced the best stock.

Looking at my own pedigrees I would expect say a third to two thirds of the names to be red, and if there are American imports and Champions listed it is not uncommon for an all red pedigree, but that is because it is far easier to get a title than in the UK. If the breed is a very popular one, then there will probably be fewer champions in the pedigree, as good but non champion dogs will be used more for breeding.

Stud Book numbers listed will give you an idea if the non Champion ancestor was a quality one, as well as the dogs carrying affixes (kennel names) rahte than obvious pet stock names like 'Lady lucy' wheras having an affix on lady Lucy eg Gobledygook Lady Lucy, whosw Mum was Gobbledygook Lucy Locket out of Gobledygook Pocket Locket, would show that the breeder is at least breeding a family line and prepared to pay for the priveledge each year of maintaining a Kennel club affix at £20 per annum (whether they breed that year or not) and will have cot over £70 (I think that is what it costs now to apply for an affix) to purchase in the first place.

Star has got 14 champions on her pedigree. The ones she has are from well known kennels.

Hiya,
Jack has 15 champs on his pedigree, including his Grandmother who holds the breed record! :D
I would love to get him into showing! ;)

In a five generation pedigree (that is 62 ancestors) my lot have starting with youngest who is a Champion herself, 37, her Mum who is RCC winner has 39, her Mum who has a lot of 3rd prizes at Champ shows (lol) has 34, and her mother who had a Champion litter brother, and has her Stud Book number has 30.

So my rough guess at a third to two thirds would seem to be right for UK Elkhounds.

And an even split between the Dam and Sire is probably a good sign but after all that there is no guarantee that the end product will be champion material :) Mine has 27 champs evenly split, a champion father that has sired champions, a known good combo of lines that has produced well and what have I got - nothing but a lovely character and a great foot warmer :)

Ours are heavy on the American imports, so the Ch numbers are high - Bertie has 53, Simone 51, Lilith & Evelyn 42, and the new babes have 50.

I think the number of champions depends on the breed in my breed most of the pedigree is full of champions but please remeber just because the dog has a champion loaded pedigree certainly doesnt mean it is capable of making a champion its self! there is more to a pedigree and buying a pup than how many names are written in red!!(if that was why you were asking) oh and as isabel already said a even split is disirable as well.
cheers
