I am thinking of using this mulch in my garden, but remember something about it affecting dogs. Anyone know any more about it.

DON'T GET IT!!! Get the ordinary bark mulch - the cocoa shell mulch is extremely dangerous for dogs - apparently they love the taste but it is extremely poisonous - like chocolate!

Hi Lorna

Margot is right - it can poison the same as chocolate so avoid it. I used to have bark mulch in my garden. It looked really nice until strong winds blew it everywhere. It ended up being a real pain and I removed it all.

I've got a small area of bark mulch in my garden. It was fine - keeping the weeds at bay and looking quite tidy. Then I got Dylan, my now 11 week old Golden. He loves to chew it and one of his fave places is lying on the bark munching away. He has also just found out that he is able to dig, and that bark was flying around the garden earlier  :)
So I would say, by all means get it, but be prepared for your dog liking it rather too much!

My friend had it in her garden (she doesn't have any dogs) and after a couple of months of our wonderful weather (!?) it had gelled and went all mouldy and ended up looking like something you'd find in a horror film. Yes it looked nice when it was first put down and yes it DID smell of chocolate but I found the smell after a while to get rather sickly. I would certainly give it a wide berth and go for the bark.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll give the cocoa shell a miss. I've just made a new flower bed which is raised up and it gets very dry, so I want something to retain the moisture. The chipped bark should be fine.
