Can anyone help? What is co-ownership of a dog and what does it involve? I notice some breeders have quite a few dogs co-owned.

Hi,

This is usually where the breeder and the buyer own the dog together, so the dog is effectively owned 50% each, this is often the case with bitches, or show dogs so the breeder can have a say in what happens when it comes to breeding.

It's purely an individual decision, usually everything works really well and I have never heard of any problems personally, but someone out there might have :)

it simply means two people are on the KC ownership papers. Sometimes its a good idea, other times it is a disaster! It can often be done when a breeder doesnt want to fully relinquish ownership of a puppy...praps doesnt have room to keep it themselves so offers it on a co-ownership basis to go & live with someone else. I did a similar thing once, taking in a dog that the breeder couldnt keep because of male rivalry & he lived with me but was exhibited in joint names. problems can occur when one person wants to breed to a dog that the other owner doesnt agree with or wants to get it neutered & so on. A real potential minefield!

as the other posters have said, and as sam point's out problems do arrise when there are differing of opinions as to eg, the stud dog being used on a bitch that the one partner may think unsuitable,it may work if one person has total control, i think you have to be very honest and point out what or were you wish to go with regards to showing and breeding, a written contract is also advisable, regards tina

Hi, I have dogs owned in different partnerships. As it happens, they all live with me. In my case the situation works very well. I agreed to certain terms when I entered into the partnerships and I intend to keep my promises. Problems only occur when one or other party breaks the agreement and the other party takes exeption. If promises and agreements are kept by both sides there will be no difficulty.

I agree in principle Dawn but in practise people fall out over minor unrelated things then the whole ownership issue ends up in court because one party has decided to go against the others wishes...or, more commonly, no agreements were made in the first place!
