Hi all, I am still in the process of looking for My perfect bulldog & would like some advice from someone that knows more than I do. Can anyone explain what the differences are between the British & English Bulldogs? I have allways wanted a Britsh Bulldog but have seen some nice english bulldog Puppies for sale but would like to know a lot more about the 2 breeds. If anyone can help please Email me at Leer2003uk@yahoo.co.uk

Many thanks Lee

hi lee,
the correct name of the breed recognised by the k.c. is simply bulldog, not "english bulldog" or "british bulldog".
unfortunately, there are people breeding and selling puppies which they call "olde english bulldogs", "regency bulldogs" and "american bulldogs" to name a few.
these are crossbred dogs and are not pedigree bulldogs.
please take care and ensure, that when you make your decision and you decide that it is a bulldog you want, please make sure that it is a pure bred bulldog, and not one of the above mentioned.
so good luck....xx

No difference - same breed. The correct name is "Bulldog".

Hi all thanks for your replys I knew about the american bulldog & i had heard of the french bulldog the only reason I found out about the so called English bulldog was that I saw a guy yesterday at a market with this beautifull looking dog so I asked about him & he said its not a british but an english bulldog , that just confused me a little he looked like a bulldog to me , lol, so basicly when i come to choosing ym dog the best thing I can do is make sure it is KC registered then I know it will be a pure bread is this correct ?

If it is "pure bread", it will cost you a lot of dough :) :):) Sorry!!.

Yes, you're right. If the pup is KC registered it will be pure bred.
:)

Actually as the poor lady with the Mini Schnauzer has found to her cost being KC registered doesn't mean the dog is pure bred!

But it's the closest thing to a guarantee.

I wonder if that is why they are so expensive?because they are our national mascot?be it British or English?

hi hazel,
i own bulldogs, and they are expensive, but all said and done they are worth every single penny i paid for them,as for them being expensive i cant answer that as i have never bred from my dogs, maybe a breeder could answer that question for you???
i did consider breeding them, but come to the conclusion, after i looked into it,it was more trouble that it was worth(to me personaly).
but maybe to some people they are priced over the odds, but i happen to think that they really are worth it,but after all its each to their own isnt it??
i also own deerhounds, but in my opinion if you have chance to own one of these magnificent dogs, you probably would not own anything else.
as i know now i certainly would not be without a bulldog at any stage in my lifetime.

Hi

The reason a bulldog is so expensive, although i think the prices have gone mad! is because they seem to be very hard to get pregnant, if you do in most cases they need c section's which cost at least £400, then the puppies need constant care as some bulldog bitches can be clumsy and sit on the puppies e.t.c
Last year i had 2 bulldog bitches pregnant but both had 1 dead puppy each which had to be removed by c section the vet bill was £850, although the fact both bitches were fine is more important.

hi mollygog,
theres a lady on the forum who had a pregnant bulldog (nasty term here) "dumped on her" which has gone on have 7 pups by c-section.
i am sure she would be glad of any advice on rearing the pups that you could give her.you can find her in the breeding section,if you wish to assist.
jane.
