Hi,
In reading some old publications (1980's) , I noticed that hip displaysia was graded on a scale of 0 to 4. From what I can find out this may have been known as Crowe grading. In the breed I am interested in, it was recommended that anything above grade 2 was not to be bred from and dogs of grades 2 or 1 should ideally only be bred to a dog which had a score of 0.
I was wondering if anyone knew how the grading system coincides with todays scoring.
Thanks :-)
hi im not sure how you would convert todays hip score results to the old way but in any breed there is usually whats called a mean score you can download a list of breed mean scores from the BVA`s website
both parents should have scores below that and as even as possible
ie left hip 2 -right hip 2 in some breeds the mean score is low so it may be acceptable in certain case for the bitch/dog to bred with a slightly higher score but only if mated to bitch/dog with a lower than average score. unfortunatly even with two low scored parents there are no guarentees
I hope this helps
There are various sites where hip score equivalents are given but I am not convinced they are very accurate.
I track Dobermann scores from any source I can and the percentages of Dobes in this country with scores of 3 per hip or below are well below those on the continent that are graded free/A/1 etc. This is especially born out when we look at the hip scores of some of the imports as I would expect them to be much lower than the ones of a few generations of UK breeding but in my experience they seem to be mostly in the higher range
