My black whippet has terrible dandruff, is there anything I can put on her coat to rid the problem and also to give her coat a good shine? I know black dogs show dandruff more and I have tried conditioner.

Coat health usually comes from the inside - what are you feeding her? She may need more oil (halibut/olive etc) on her dinner.

A friend had an Irish Setter who always had a most beautiful shiny coat but as soon as she got stressed dandruff would appear. Usually when they were at shows.
How often do you bathe her? Sometimes dandruff can be caused by too much bathing and the skin being too dry. As others have said try a fish oil - I use halibut which is available at a few online stores. Have been using it for 15 years on dachsies, mix breeds and whippets wtih no trouble at all and all have fantastic coats.

Yes, I also find if I bath my whippet he will be scurfy for a few days - so I only do this to mine if they are really dirty. Fish oil (Cod) is rich in Vitamins A & D, probably better off using Wheatgerm OIl (Vit E - excellent for skin and coat) or Evening Primrose as this has very high fatty acids which are also excellent for the skin. I personally use the evening primrose. Mind you some people find Cod or halibut oil works, up o you but I ma sure one of the recommendations will work!!

Have you tried also using, on the coat, mink oil in spray formula or even bay rum oil, available from 'Boots' chemist. spray either on and stroke in the direction of the coat growth with a piece of chamois or silk or velvet. 'Mikki' even do a hand glove with chamois on one side and velvet on the other. It really does work a treat

Try homoeopathic remedy Sulphur 6x which helps coat and skin condition.

Hi,
We have short coated breeds too and this can happen with our dogs especially in summer. As with humans (ask a lady !) your body needs to be moisturised and we use a vitamin E moisturiser or the Johnsons Baby Moisturiser a couple of times a week before bathing. The coat will look yuk after you first put it on because it lifts all the dry skin to the top but if you keep it up the skin will become moisturised and you shouldnt have any problems. Give it a try !
