Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / peeing and waking up early

my puupy is 5 1/2 months old she sleeps in a crate on a night. Sometimes she is dry when i get up and
sometimes she has peed. There does not seem to be a pattern to it. She goes to pee ebery night before she goes to bed. Has she got a problem or is she still too young to expect her to hold it every night.

She also wakes up very early in the morning and barks to be let out, sometimes she goes to the toilet as soon as she gets let out and sometimes she just seems to want to be let out. How long would you expect a pup of her age to sleep on a night.

Hello,

What breed is she? What do you feed her? How late do you go to bed and how early do you get up?

I doubt she has a problem, so don't worry just yet, it might be a little habit she has got herself into that just needs amending. It could also be that the smell of her pee is still there and encouraging her to go again, it depends what you clean it up with.

One of our beardie bitches wasn't 100% clean at night until she was 8 months old and then suddenly it clicked and she was fine ever since.

She is a cross breed of small/medium size. She is fed on beta puppy at the mo. And I go to bed between 10.30 - 11 pm and usually come down stairs around 6.30 through the week and on the weekend it's bed between 11.30 and 12.00 and she usually wakes me up by barking at around 7.30am.
i usually get up when she barks in hope i can catch before she pees but usually she has already done it.

I clean her crate with a mild solution od washing powder as someone suggested on the boards.

I leave paper in her crate to soak it if she has an accident . Do you think the paper could be giving her the idea that it's ok to go? Do you think it might be a good idea to try her without the paper?

Hi, I wouldn't asy she is waking early, as she is going 8 hours! This is a long time to hold on, and I must admit, having had two children, I cannot hold on al night for 8 hours without going for a pee.

From what I have read it would appear that full blasdder control isn't gained until about 5 months, so some are bound to be slower.

Do you get up at all at night yourself to go for a wee? If so how about taking her out for a quick wee break and back to bed with no talking or fussing?

Hi Xena,

How late does she have her last drink, being fed dry food will make her thirsty and if she drinks loads quite late, she won't be able to hold on very long at night.

As Brainless says, pups don't gain full control until at least 3-4months old, sometimes longer and it's hard for them, especially if she is a small x-bred and has a small bladder.

We always go to bed about 12ish and get up at 6 when we have small pups, until they are at least 3 months old and then slowly extend the time and see how long they can hold on for, until we get back to 10.30-11 and up at 6am.

Try feeding her a smaller amount in the evening and feeding her a bit earlier so she gets a chance to drink and wee before bed, or think about changing her food to a good quality wet food, they will drink less then. :)

we have a lab who is nearly 6 months old and we have only been able to trust her the last week or so.
We found the same as someone said above that one day she just stopped weeing in the house. It was like she just decided one day to stop.

Till i around the same age- 8 hours is realy good! Some nights she wakes us up at 3 am, sometimes she waits til tony gets up for work at ten to 6. I've heard that not leaving them water down after a certain time can help but not tried it yet cos shes pretty good so far i think. I wouldnt expect her to be completely dry at night until around 6 or 7 months.

I think thats fantastic! We have an 9wk old puppy and we go to bed at about 11ish and he wakes me between 5-6am to go outside then he comes back to bed with us untill hubby gets up at 7-8am..

i naturally wake at around 7:30am so he has the same routine 7 days a week.

Perhaps you might want to invest in some Odorkill found here http://www.animal-health.co.uk/products_disease.htm it kills any smells that may be left behind after she has weed in a place you dont want her too. This works for me and should stop her thinking she can go in the same spot over and over.

At the start i set my alarm to wake me up so i would take the pup out, as i did not want him to wee inside at all..this worked and after a few nights he started to let me know when he needed to go.

Daytimes are getting better but he does not tell me when he wants to go i just have to keep an eye on him! Im hoping that with time he will hold it longer and tell me that he needs to go out :)

Good luck and i think your doing fine, just dont expect too much of them!
