I have had so much help from this website in the past regarding Molly my Tibetan Terrier, for which I am really grateful. She is eight months now and shaping up really well, but the one small thing really that I would like to deter her from is licking everybodys hands and legs if bare and feet. I know it doesn,t sound much but a lot of people don,t really want their hands washed when they meet her, especially is she has just been eating a cow-pat! As is her wont.Any ideas how to put a stop to it? Thanks once again for all the help in the past. Jane

This is how the lower orders greet their betters in the dog world, or so we're told, so I supose your pup feels submissitive toward humans, not a bad thing but irritating never the less. Would have thought that she will grow out of it and may be some one on the site will have delt with it and will let you know what to do. I would have thought that the way to start is to withdraw your hand and ask your visitors to do the same, but don't tell her off as this in therory could make things worse. Ja:)kie

Natasha,
If you are interested in the dog phsycology then i would strongly reccomend ' The Dog Listener' by Jan fennel ( prob got title and author wrong but its something like that! :D ) she goes into depth as to why dogs do some of the things that they do.
I read it a few months ago and it gave me a great insight into their behaviour and the dogs position within different packs.
Good reading

And if you're interested in finding out about canine behaviour try and get hold of anything by John Fisher or Peter Neville or Valerie O'Farrell - ofcourse, if you're happy to line somebody elses pocket and not learn an awful lot about the wide variety of canine problems - stick with Jan Fennell - just MHO

My Samma is a licker too... Over the years, I just tell her "stop". She'll look up when she hears her name and I say "good girl". If she goes back to it, "Stop". She looks up..... No fear or anything. :)
It works usually the first time now :) It's habitual with her. She'll lick her paws to pieces if we let her. Sneaky about it too :D :D
good luck,
toodles

Jane if a chance ever arises you should meet Lewis Wolfhound, champion people bather :-). It wouldn't stop Molly licking, but it would put the problem in proportion so to speak :D!

Our dog isn't a 'licky' dog at all and very rarely does it obviously rates himself way above us then:D So when the kids do get licked by other dogs they are in fits of giggles which then of course seems to encourage the dog to do it more:D And they find it fascinating so they'd love to meet your wolfie, at least they'd be clean for a change:D

I have a wilful confident madam of 2 1/2 who loves to lick feet (pst I rather enjoy it), my daughter if she comes in the room is disgusted by it and usually chases her away!
So if it is showing defernce, it is the only sign I get, lol :D :D

Nah! When wearing sandals, with all the walking I do, my feet get filthy! Though she aint daft, she licks them first thing mostly, before the footwear goes on, LOL!

There's a thought for a new business Anita ;-). You've heard of automatic car washes - maybe I could 'market' Lewis as a mobile, fun automatic kid wash :D.

Perhaps the dog is very submissive, sounds like you have pretty feet brainless, I wouldn't mind giving your feet a lick :)

Wrong on both counts I'm afraid! :D
My dog is even worse, when you get out of the bath she seems to think that it is her duty to lick you dry! She loves bathwater to drink but definately not to sit in!! I thought it was just her but then i took her to my friends to dogsit whilst they were away and i found that when i got out of the bath i had my BC licking one leg and my friends dachsie licking the other. I do wonder why i bothered to have a bath at all!! Dogs can be wierd can't they?!

Does your dog eat the soap, too?
Our lab, who would lick us dry given half the chance, ate numerous bars of coal tar soap with no after-effects.
Luckily for us we moved to a house with an upstairs bathroom, and the dogs stayed downstairs, so we could bath in peace!
Honey is rather keen on licking too, but I don't believe she does it in deference to us, she just seems to like the taste (sweaty/salty?....mmmmm) I have just told her 'no licking' and she stops every time now, I think consistency is the key, you will have to tell her every time she does it, use a key word and always praise when she obeys.
JG, I mey a woman with a XCollie this morning who's dog loves Imperial Leather - expensive taste!
