I am the proud owner of a staffordshire bull terrier, in one of my books that i have it says that there is a swing designed for dogs to jump up at the rubber ring then swing from it has anyone heard of this and if so where could i start looking for one or how would i make one ie: where could i purchase the parts from, any help or advice from anyone would be gratefully appreciated thanks scoobs.

Sorry but I don't like the sound of that. Are you not afraid that your dog could do itself some permanent damage eg spinal trouble ?

well they seem to like it staffy's, the idea i believe is they swing on it let go then swing some more, as far as spinal damage is concerned i'm not sure, all i can say is a staff is no ordinary dog and i can't imagine why they would say it is good for them in the book when it could cause damage but thanks for the reply

Sounds like a training aid the dog fighting world use to encourage their dogs to jump up bite and hold. It strengthens the jaws and neck muscles.

When we were looking at SBT's a while ago, there was a link on one of the SBT sites to a video clip of a Stafford doing said activity - I think it may have been in America but not sure, can't seem to find it now - typical! The post must have been cemented into the ground, the post was shaped like a hangmans pole. i.e one straight, solid (!) vertical pole, then shorter horizontal pole at a right angle to the vertical one, supported by two diagonal pieces of wood (would look like 2 triangles from above if that makes any sense), some sort of heavy duty bungee rope was suspended from this, with something for the dog to grab onto to. The dog in the video was having a whale of a time!

On a serious note, at the time we worried it could teach a dog to be aggressive and not let go, and that it could damage it'd rear end or legs on the down bounce - although the dog did spend a lot of time swinging through the air, smiling like only a Stafford can!!!

Hopefully a Staff person will be along with the name for said piece of equipment, it's on the tip of my tongue ................

Staffys do like to "hang" on to things and play tugging and pulling games .
Can I ask how old your Staffy is as young Staffs should not play hardy pulling games because of their teeth

Make your own out of a tyre hanging from a strong rope :)

My last Staffy ( Sam) adored Tyres ad Traffic cones :)

FOUND IT!!!!!

Type "Jasmine on the springpole" into Google, that should take you to the page where there is a video clip of a Stafford doing the 'spring pole'. She looks like she is having so much fun. There is also directions on how to make your own. If you put Staffordshire Bull Terrier and spring pole into a search engine you should come up with a few other pieces of info too.

(Lel, my Lab X loves traffic cones too, so much I have to be careful in the park if the kids are using them as goal posts, not all parents find it amusing! :D)

I've seen videos just like this seized from dog-fighters and used in court as evidence. The people were convicted, as it's (apparently) a well-known training aid...... :(

The only ever bit of DIY I have ever done was a tyre/rope set up, very proud of it I was. The Four of them just looked at me like... yeah and what are we supposed to do with that, it hung there for three weeks before it was taken down... ungrateful sods.

she's 11 months old when i take her out with my friend and his two older staffs mother and son my dog and his older bitch play tug on a big stick the noise is so loud you would think they are scapping but the tails are going ten to the dozen as well, another thing she does is when i'm sitting in the garden she'll have her ring in her mouth come up to me offer the ring so we can tug together or she'll run of and rag it typical bitch!!!!!!!!!!

They do love to play pulling games and staffys can be quite vocal when they play :)

If you really want to get a spring pole wait until your girl is at least 18 months old as they can damage themselves quite easily - and damage to the neck is common. All Staffords love pulling games, but again be careful - and never ever swing a dog round when it has full grip on something!

Also, watch your bitch and the older female so that this "game" doesn't get out of hand. 2 friends of mine had smae sex staffords and they used to play like this - when the younger reached maturity they got very into it adn aroused and a full blood bath ensued where both owners got badly bitten trying to seperate them! The noise is good though- if they were serious you wouldn't hear a sound...

My Boston Terriers love to do that as well. We tied a chew rope to a tree (no branches around)which they grab and swing from under supervision of course. Is this safe for them? They do love it as well very much especially Tiva she will grab it and really swing alot and hold on for awhile too. :)

ttfn :)
