Cats Farmed for skins in europe

"It is thought that tens of thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands of cat and dog skins are traded in Europe each year"
- By EMMA DANBURY [gb] Date 09.05.03 12:11 UTC
i read this in our dogs magazine, they had a lead on apair of boots and said hundreds of dog are transported in a secret compartment under lorries and then slaughtered SICK. there was also pictures of the conditions they are in live dogs living with dead dogs and then they get hammered on the head. RUTHLESS. LOW LIFE (ille leave it at that otherwise there could be a bit of editing and admin would have there work cut out)

I saw this on the news last night, I was not surprised :( but was very saddened to hear that animals are not only farmed but also "collected"

The Daily Mail has also highlighted it today ..I saw the headlines as we walked around Tesco. They also have a photograph of the coat made from (apparantly) 42 puppies

:(

In fairness would they do this if people didnt wear fur ???
Without getting into a debate about something I feel quite strongly about just wanted to say there is an advert in my local supermarket posted by a Cat Rescue Centre which warns people to keep an eye on their cats as two vans have been seen in the area picking up cats . Plus the numbers of missing cats has increased in the area .
At the end of the day some people (???)will do ANYTHING for money :(

Not wishing to create a stir here ..but *I* personally have no problem with wearing anything that I would eat ..if you see what I mean? So I am happy to wear leather and even coney (Rabbit) as I eat both beef and rabbit with no qualms.

Wearing something that is only killed for it's coat however , is an entirely different kettle of fish.

I feel like that too, Melody. If the animal is going to be eaten it would be wrong to waste any of it.

Yes , I can see that point (although I still wouldnt wear it personally )
I much prefer to stroke a live cat than a dead one :(
Its scarey to think its going on locally though - well in UK in general as I am well aware this sort of thing goes on abroad

It's not just fur coats though :( It's ornaments and little stuffed childrens toys etc... purportedly fake but DNA tested to be dog or cat
A disgraceful deception.

I bought the Daily Mail today as normal...lets just say my lunch just about stayed down..I was so sickened. Even now, the photo of the cats squashed in cages is haunting me.

Hi everyone,

I also agree with Melody, as long as the animal has been bred for the food chain, well cared for and had a happy life (even if that may be short) and humainly (sp?) killed, there is no problem.

BUT

Keeping animals (no matter what they are, but it's always worse with dogs and cats cause they are pets) in appalling conditions and torturing them is definately NOT ON!!!!!

If only there was something all us dog owners and breeders could do to help stop this awful trade. :(

What can you do?

• Write to the Rt Hon Baroness Symons at the Department of Trade and Industry, 1 Victoria Street, London SW1H OET calling for the UK to ban the import, export and trade in products made from dog and cat fur because UK involvement on any scale is not acceptable and to promote a similar measure throughout Europe.

• Write to your MP and ask him or her to take the matter up with the Department for Trade and Industry and to sign EDM 102 Trade in Dog and Cat Fur.

• Write to your MEP asking him or her to support an EU wide ban on the trade and to lobby the EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection David Byrne for its introduction.

• Write to Commissioner Byrne yourself at the Department for Health and Consumer Protection, The European Commission, Rue de La Loi 200, B 1049 Brussels.

If you do not know who your MP or MEP is please call your local library or use www.faxyourmp.com to find your MP and to fax for free.

and of course……..

• Refuse to buy any products made from real fur - this is the only way you can be sure you are not buying dog and cat fur. Remember, this includes toys for animals sold in pet shops, ornaments and trinkets.

The faxyourmp link is very useful and I've now found out who my MP is...needless to say an email is going to her regarding this very cruel trade. I hope others will do likewise. :(
