Hi all,
I am new on here and would just like to say that i have found this forum very helpful indeed.
I have a bitch who is 45 days into her pregnancy. All is going well apart from her eating!!!!
She has always been a fussy, stubborn eater.....but....she is worse now.
I have had her checked and the vets tell me she is spoilt!!! I had her on complete dry food , but when she got to 22 days she refused to eat it at all, this went on for 5 days so in the end i tried all sorts just to get her to eat....i have now been told to give her complete puppy food....poss mixed with smelly tripe.
Can anyone give me advice pleases as i am getting told just to leave the food down and that she will eat eventually!! But i get worried with her been near to welping!!!
Please help!!!!!
thankyou

When my girl had her litter 2 years ago, she stopped eating from day 28! I tried everything going, even down to £5 per tin of special dog food from the vet (size of a tuna tin) still nothing, my vet said she would eat when hungry, we found she did like sausages but only every 3 or 4 days! This continued right till the end of her pregnancy and she went on to have a healthy litter of 7 pups, once she delivered and was feeding the pups she soon made up for lost time.............I know it's a very worrying time, I was back and forth to the vets twice a week, if you are really concerned go back to your vet. I have another girl now day 58 she only eats after 7pm, but not much at that! You have to remember, to start with they can sometimes have sickness, then as time goes by their tummies start to feel full, try offering just a tiny amount of food, I found mine used to eat if I 'hand' fed her...........lol.

Hi sjcm,
It is very worrying when they go off their food while pregnant. have you thought that maybe because the dried food swells in the tummys, it makes her feel really bloated and because she hasn't got much room, might be uncomfortable.
What about feeding her something like Naturediet, which is a complete wet food and made with only natural ingredients. As it is wet, it doesn't swell and smells wonderful!!
Good luck and hope everything goes well for you. :)

My bitch is going through the same thing, Terribly frightening.
Next time I go to the vets I am going to have him do a blood test to see if there is any source of infection!
This is one of the most stressful times of my life, but I am determined to enjoy it!

I have a bitch who is about 51 days, she's always been a fussy eater but now that she's pregnant wont eat anything that has the word "dog" on the packet!! However she will eat chicken, pasta, rice, eggs and rice crispies and I don't know of a dog that wont do anything for a bowl of fresh chicken. All I do is give her eggs or cereal in the morning and boil up whole chickens in a presure cooker and give her about a third with stock and add rice or pasta (she likes the wholemeal pasta twirls) and she eats really well. She might be a bit spoilt but at the end of the day her health and the puppies is more important and I feel a lot better seeing her eat.
Try some chicken and good luck.
