I was wondering whether the unbeaten rule applies at exemption/companion shows - does anyone know? My friend entered her mastiff in two pedigree classes, got 1st in one and 3rd in the other, so she didn't go back in for Best in Show - whereas I thought that at exemption shows the winner of each class would automatically go for BIS. As I'm doing entries for a show coming up, I thought I'd better be clear on this rule, just in case anyone asks! Hilda
I dont think there is such a rule at exempion shows but the KC have a site the rules will be on there We have a show every year in aid of rescue but we now just have it as a 2FUN DOG Show" therefore no strict rules apply as the very first excemption show we held a man brought a 5 and an half month pup and the lady taking enties wouldnt let him enter he had travelled a long way and we lost his frienship and support so now its just all for fun .
At all the shows I go to they cqall in unbeaten dogs! Logivc dictates that a dog already beaten by another can't go BIS, I think there would be a lot of disgruntled exhibitors if this happened, not leat the ones who beat the dog. Now if it was beaten in a novelty class, that is totally different.

Yeah I think the un beaten rule would apply to, if your dog is beaten in a class how can it go for best in show at the end ? however if there are no puppy classes and a pup has to go in the junior class , it could still qualify for best puppy as it has not been beaten by any other pup. Tracey
Yes, I too think the beaten dog rule will apply. Apart from all the logical reasons why it should be so, these Companion Dog Shows are held under Kennel Club rules. Which brings me to something that ' Mattie' said in her post. I could be a million miles wrong, but, I have always been under the impression that to participate in unlicenced events could lead to some kind of disiplinary action by the Kennel Club. The only thing I can think of, is that the KC could exclude or ban anyone supposedly found 'guilty' of this. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? Dawn R.
Went to a Companion show on Monday and it didn't matter if you'd been beat as long as you'd won a first in a class. Don't know whether that's the right way but that's how they did it.
Years ago I went to an exemption show with a different Judge for each class and a new one for BIS, so all class winners went in for BIS regardless of if they had been beaten in another class or not as the orgainser said it was a new judge!

It is up to the judge who is called into the ring for the challenge, but it is usual for it to be unbeaten dogs.
Hi, according to the KC the reason they are exemption shows is becasue they are exempt from the usual rules (apart from the few laid down just fro them- ie no under 6 months, no CC winners in show classes etc) This means that the organisers/judge can decide themselves what rules to lay down/apply bye Gwen
Two things, it is now: no CC winners, RCC winners or JW holders ;-) just the stud book number to go then :-(
But out of interest, can the above list go in the novelty classes? I didn't think they could? I like the 'exempt from rules' that is easy to remember :D
Yep, it means I can still enjoy these lovely shows even with my Champion, (who got nothing in her two novelty classes on Bank holiday Monday) and her RCC winning dam. :D
I handled her Aunty (belonging to a disabled freind) who is still eligible for these shows went BIS from the pedigree section!
Hi Dawn, For rules thing see my answer above. Re: the KC/unlicensed event - yes, theoreticallly you can be disciplined/fined/banned for organising or competing at an unlicensed event. Of course, the bulk of the people who go in for "fun"dog shows at fetes, gymkhanas etc dont ever compete at KC events, so it would be a bit pointless reporting them;) I was wondering about this regulation when I read the recentish report about the "alternative" dog show body which is meant to be being set up - cant see it going ahead as people will be scared to enter! bye Gwen
