Topic Dog Boards / Health / Unwell after worming tablet??
- By Rooney [gb] Date 27.02.03 17:36 UTC
Hi there,

Murphy was wormed yesterday with Flubenol Easy (something that the vet gave me).
My question is - can this make dogs a little off colour? Murphy didn't want his tea tonight and has been sleeping for most of the afternoon. It's very unusual for him not to eat.
Any ideas?

Ruth ..Hudson went off his food for about 24 hours after he had his booster injection ..and then again just after he was wormed ...so I would think it isn't too uncommon.

I would keep and eye on him for the next 24 hours ....make sure he is drinking though :)

Hope that puts your mind at rest a little

HI
all 3 of mine were wormed recentlt and they all refused their food for 24 hrs so I would say its not unusual(they all ate well the next day!!).

HI Ruth

My 2 are often a little off colour after worming and on occasion have even vomited a few hours later too. Thought that it was just a quirk with mine but apparantly not after reading this thread! :)

Perhaps I ought to try worming our beagle. She managed to open the food bin tonight and is now looking rather bloated and ill. Anything to take her mind off food for 5 minutes must be worth a try. :)

Hi,

Murphy's fine this morning - back to his usual 'mad lab' self!!:)
The thing with puppies is that you never know what they're munching 100%of the time! Murphy goes outside to toilet and usually a little sniff around to see what he can scavenge!
He did eat some chives and mint out of the garden yesterday - his breath smells lovley!!:D

Abbey the beagle is very subdued this morning & she was violently ill in the night. Considering she is very bright why doesn't she learn the consequences of stealing all that food?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.02.03 12:13 UTC
For her to associate the sickness with the stealing of food, she would have to be sick within seconds of her stealing it. Even a minute later and there would be no association in her mind.

Hi C/crest, was there anything in the rubbish that could harm, like cooked bones or plastc wrappers etc? Just wondering if all the rubbish that she ate came out! :)

Hi

My dog vomited after worming tablets. Each time we tried she bought them back a few hours later. The vet has no idea why, not sure how common this is though.
- By wizzasmum [gb] Date 01.03.03 10:51 UTC
Hi Kaz
It is a side effect with many wormers. Try panacur which is very gentle - needs repeat dose though. One of my dogs is even sick after Strong Hold treatment which is applied to the skin. the effects do not last though, so a small price to pay for peace of mind ;-)

This evening I wormed my 4 Pharaoh Hounds with Drontal Plus
so far ok. In the past they have occasionally been sick.

On the topic of stealing food - last evening when I was doing the
washing up only one the oldest / Hannah was about. I later found
the other three upstairs in our spare room where Sultan the rat has a
enormous cage. They had got a bag of rat food !!
They have never touched the rat food before - today the trio had
maize & oats in their poo ! Tomorrow I need to stock up on more rat
food !

Max (Cavalier) had drontal plus, half a tablet some months ago. A few hours later he was sick. I gave him a full tablet yesterday (he is 9.6 kg), and yes, again he vomitted several hours later. I thought that was that until I woke this morning. There was vomit and poo all around his cage, most of it watery. We bathed and cleaned him. All the bedding was thrown and I had to do some steam cleaning. He again had a discharge, this time it contained blood. I had no option but to seek urgent advice (on a bank holiday, the vets charges were astronomical!). The vet claims that it could not have have been the drontal - I have some very serious doubts.

Evertime we wormed our Golden she suffered from very bad diahorrea. The vet was adamant the two were unconnected. Finally, after suggesting she stay overnight with him :D. He now prescribes her a puppy dosage.

If you talk the the manufactures of Dontrol + they will tell you never to use the product again on that particular animal. And after you have put the phone down to them, pick it up again and look for another vet.

Had a dog nearly die from alergic reaction to Drontol and they suggested that I used Panacure instead. I still use Dontrol on my other dogs. It's not the product it is the product + dog.

Strongid Paste for worming dogs is a very good, inexpensive one that few people know about because they barely advertise. I worm 2 week pups with it and have never had any poorliness afterwards, which I have with both the two most popular brands.

Thanks Liberty, Jackie H and Westie Lover.
Max is improved, but still tired.
I will give Drontal + a 'miss' in future. I will try panacure, but will also procede with extreme caution.

Hi,I know of a friend who had big problems with Panacur granules when used this on her
Goldies.
I'm sure there is a Golden Retriever breeder who was doing some research
on the side affects of wormers, on particular Panacur.
I think it was Kim Ellis I would have to look it up not 100% sure it was her.
There was a thread on it about 3 yrs ago.
I only use Drontal I have a friend who is a verinary nurse also breeds Goldens
she will only use Drontal.
Again its what your happy to use.
If you have any side affects from a drug you can ask your vet for a form you fill
in which goes back to the drug company or write to them directly. Some vets
if they are promoting a particular product will be reluctant to send forms back.
I changed my vet after he insisted I used Panacur when I said no I prefer Drontal
he wasn't happy, my new vet gives us a choice so we can make an informed decision

Regards Briony :-)

Thanks Briony,
Looks like I will have to give this more thought.
I have contacted the breeder to find out if Max's brothers or sisters have had similar problems. Drontal is used with them, and there are no probs. So, it seems that Max has an aversion to Drontal and I assume that he may have a particularly sensitive digestive system.
I will be staying with the vet practice, but will be asking for a different vet on any future visit.

Hi all

Mine used to have Drontal +, but it used to make them off for a day or so, and usually gave them the runs. I have started using Panacur Favourites, which look and smell like treats. (You can now get cat version too.) Dogs were all wormed last Sunday, and they loved them! And none of them even had the runs. I think the only thing is, they don't treat Tapeworm, so I think you would still need to give Drontal + every other time, just in case.

My last dog had a type of fit after I gave him a worming tablet and it really scared me so I never gave him another one.
When I got my new puppy I searched for a natural wormer.
For those of you who would prefer not to give conventional wormers there is natural wormer called Imu-worm by a company called Clover Leaf Pet Care , their website address is www.naturalanimalhealth.co.uk I give this to my puppy and cats.

Apparently conventional wormers affect the liver hence the sickness and/or diarrohea.
