I have a male gsd. show dog. I would like to breed him to my bitches. The first time I tried he was 12mo. old. All he wants to do is play and wrestle with them. Next time he was 14mo. old. Same thing happened. Next time he was 16 mo. old. Same thing. He smells them a little now and then. but never has tried to mount. He just doesn't seem to have any interest in breeding.

I take it you have had all your stock tested for all the relevent problem, now you had better have the vet check the dogs suitability as a stud and also do a sperm count.
Not all dogs are suitable for use at stud, not all dog are interested. One of the reasons that dogs will not mount, is bad or painful hips, but as you will have had him hip scored I would think this could be ruled out as the cause of the problem.
Also interested that you want to use him on all your bitches, is he suitable to use on all the bitches, you must have done a load of research before buying him if he is.

Presuming your dog has all the relevent health checks ie. hips & haemophillia & the pedigrees are compatible, it would be best to get him an experienced bitch for the first time.
It can be a nightmare if both dog & bitch are maidens with no clue as to what to do. An experienced bitch will probably stand for the dog & encourage him.
Also try & get someone who is experienced with matings to help you.
Above all, remain calm as the dog will pick up on your anxiousness. Lots of praise & patience is needed.
Best of luck,
Nicola.

Hi,
As the others have mentioned, you must make sure all your dogs/bitches have been tested for all hereditery problems before you even consider breeding!! I guess this is your first time breeding, so I would recommend you get the help of an experienced person.
The bitch needs to be held and the dog needs to be guided into position, it's not wise to let them get on with it, this is how injuries to both dog and bitch happen, BUT NEVER force a mating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If the bitch is ready and someone gently holds her still and the dog is capable and helped into place, you should be fine, but even then, some dogs just don't want to mate and some bitches will not allow it. Thats what happens wtih breeding I am afraid.
Please don't try it on your own, you need two people at least to help at a mating to make sure everything goes to plan.
