Anyone ever heard of a dog having a nose bleed?

Zara/Pharaoh Hound had one this morning whilst out walking - just one nostril
was bleeding. I first noticed the blood dripping and her trying to lick it.

Dogs like any animal can burst a blood vessle in the nose (and there is a plentiful supply of blood to a dogs nose!) But if this should happen more than once I would get it looked at because sometimes it's not a normal blood vessel that bleeds but possibly a growth or some other 'nasty' which it's best to discount.

There are many causes of bleeding from the nose, some innocent some not - my bitch bled copiously from hers after an eye operation!

If it happens again or she bleeds anywhere else for no apparent cause get her checked out

I had Zara checked by the vet - she's ok - but he did say if it happened
again to take her to vets for a more thorough check up.

Ironically today/Sat I was walking the hounds near the vets when
Hannah had a nose bleed so went on to see vet with her - he/vet
is wondering if someone has put poison down or if it's just the hounds
sniffing about.
The vet asked if either Zara or Hannah had coughed or sneezed before
- but they hadn't.

Hi Pam, I hope this won't scare you too much, but I lost my first lab to nasal cancer, which started with nose bleeds. However, being as your other dog has also had a bleed, it sounds more like some foreign body they've both sniffed up. Hope they are both fine, and I'm sure your vet will be well aware of any more sinister symptoms.

One of my old GSDs used to suffer quite regularly with severe nose bleeds which were quite scary. A number of tests were carried out which ruled out the more sinister causesand in the end the vet concluded that he had a grass allergy, similar to hay fever in humans (his nose bleeds only ever occurred in the spring/summer). According to my vet this is more commonly found in collies though I had never heard of it. The nose bleeds never caused him any serious problems just gave me heart attacks and he continued to have them about once every couple of weeks throughout summer until we sadly lost him to CDRM at only 7 years old.

Fortunately we've had no nosebleeds since then.
Touch wood !!
