Topic Dog Boards / Showing / nervous when handled
- By lel [gb] Date 02.05.03 23:24 UTC
Gus was at handling class before and was fine until the handler went over his backend . He seem to try and crouch himself down - thats the only way I can describe it . Also when the dogs were being stood he seemed nervous and edgy when the handler walked at the back of him. Although we tried to keep him facing ahead his eyes were trying to watch what the handler was doing .
Any one have any tips - supposed to be entering his first show next week :(
He's 6 months by the way a nd isnt at all bothered when WE try to handle his back area and up until now he hasnt been bothered about this

All I can suggest is that you get all your friends and anyone else you can think of to stroke his back end in a relaxed way, while just chatting to you etc.

And the judge won't be expecting perfection from a baby, anyway. :)

Agree with Jeangenie get as many people to go over him in a relaxed way.
Wonder what he will do when checked to see whether he has two fully decended!!! :D oooppps.......

Is this a common thing though ?
Do you think he will outgrow it - really worried now as we only have a week to sort it out .

Hopefully he will get used to it with plentu of handling and shows :-)
He will be nervous at his first show anyway. Has your breeder given you any advice, presuming they show?

Hi Lel,

Don't panic, it's his first show and he's a baby, easier said than done I know, if it was Sal (now I'm worried it might be soon, another thing to start worrying about ;) ) I'm sure I'd be panicing as well.

However just to say didn't you notice at the show we meet at a lot of the pups were the same trying to watch the judge when they walked behind. And one or two of the pups crouched down a little, a wole new experience.

I'd assume like most things if Gus doesn't think you think it's a big deal the he won't either.

Enjoy the day; think of it this way it's the only time this will be your first time, so enjoy it both of you.

Karen,

puzzled as to why he has started doing this -he doesnt mind being handled by anyone - is fine about having his head , teeth or any other part checked except for his backend as mentioned.
dont suppose you have a magic wand to lend me do you ? ;)

If i had one you would be the first I'd lend it to, have a lovely day and ENJOY it. I know you will with hindsight but on the day try to enjoy it to.
