Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / toilet training puppies overnight- lab

anyone know when puppies are able to "hold" overnight? I have successfully day-trained my 11 wk old lab to go outside using crate training, but overnight I leave the crate door open and put newspaper down. how long before I can get up in the a.m not to be greeted by puddles and mess??! any other tips on crate training (do you put newspaper down overnight in the crate for example) gratefully received. Thanks

It depends entirely on the pup. Just as some babies are potty-trained earlier than others. I once had a lab who was clean and dry, day and night, by 9 weeks of age. Others can't 'hold on' till they're about 6 months. It's the luck of the draw.

My 12 week old Golden goes through from 10-30pm -6am but then he shares the crate
with Amber the other Golden and he does'nt seem to have a problem holding on.
Amber probably warned him you wee on me your out of here :-D.

thanks Briony, that sounds quite hopeful then! she also likes to shred newspaper, so I was hoping not to have to put paper down in the crate for this reason, also don't want to encourage her to mess in the crate.

would you suggest putting newspaper in the crate overnight just in case of accidents?

Gus never woke up for the toilet at night right from the day we got him ( at 8 weeks) but as soon as he woke he would peg it outside for a wee - bless :)
As mentioned I think its down to the individal pup

thanks Lel, sounds like maybe I need to give it a go overnight in the crate and see! maybe she is getting up to have a wee on the paper because she can. If the crate is closed she may hold on or ask to be let out (hopefully not at 6am!!)

Hi Sara ,I never use paper from day 1.Hes clean day and night.

Just put vet beeding in the crate,so if there is an accident it leaves the dogs dry
and is damp underneath, put clean bedding in.Obviously you only crate them
togerther it they get along fine and both dogs have enough room to turn around.
This working for me and he does not wee in the crate I check the bedding each morning.
In the beginning we may have had only one or two accidents then that was it
he was dry.But like I say Amber has threatened him :-D

Regards Briony- let me know if it works for you. :-)

hi Briony
vet bedding sounds a good idea - I had been using old blankets, but are a pain to wash and dry- last 2 nights I have closed the crate door - first night, some wee but no mess, last night wee and poo - my dog doesn't seem to care if she messes in her bed! Also, either I sleep very deeply (unlikely as her bed in in the kitchen, right below my bedroom) or she doesn't cry to be let out! Will try vet bedding and see how we get on with that. Thanks for the tip! Sara
