Max our six month minature Schnauzer has started wet his bed usually during the night. He is house trained but we still leave paper down for him at night ( 6 to 7 hours is still a long time for a small dog to last ) Is there anything we can or should be doing? Otherwise he is a delightfull dog, loving full of fun and well behaved.

Hello,

He sounds like a lovely little guy, but obviously this is becoming a problem for you. :(

I would suggest first to make sure you thoroughly clean the bedding/bed/crate whetever you have with a special odour remover to remove any trace of pee. Household cleaners will make the problem worse, because they smell like wee (to a dog).

If he has no problem during the day, then there is unlikely to be any infection (I would think) :) , next is what food is he on?

Many of the wet foods contain approx. 80% water, so this will make them pee and the dry foods will obviously make them thirsty, so they will drink, so maybe change his feeding time.

This will give him a chance to either pee or drink and pee before he goes to bed. Also make sure he goes for a pee very last thing at night, literally just before you go to bed and go as late as possible and get up as early as possible, even if it's just to let him out for a wee and then go back to bed for an hour or so.

There could be a behavioural reason for this to, it could be he is feeling insecure and feels the need to reapply his scent around to make it smell more like him. Is he particularly dominant, maybe he is scent marking, but normally he would do this during the day as well.

Have you changed his routine at all, maybe he has been upset by this. Lastly I take it you don't tell him off when you find the pee in the morning, this would make him nervous about you coming in in the morning and therefore uptight and he would need to pee, because he is not relaxed and asleep. Never punish him for peeing, unless you catch him in mid flow and even then don't smack him or anything like that, just firmly say no and remove him to the garden.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply and information, it may be the normal 'domestic' cleaners that we are using. He sleeps in a washable dog bed, we just put it in the washer/dryer it comes out clean & fresh smelling (well to humans) we then use a citrus scented cleaner on the floor. Will get some odour remover.
We feed him on Eukanuba small breed/puppy and try to ensure that he is kept to a set routine.

Thanks

Dennis
