Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Housetraining Westie puppy, help wanted

Hi All

I am new to the board and am wanting some advice please, i have got a Westie puppy called Hamish, he is 11 weeks old this Sunday and i have had him 3 weeks this Saturday. When i first brought him home we decided to use the puppy training pads which at first he was using brilliantly by the back door but come the 2nd week he decided to start weeing anywhere around the conservatory, i have kept him in this room instead of letting him roam right through the house until he is clean as we have got floor tiles in the conservatory which is easier to keep mopped over. He goes outside to go to pooh and if we are not around he will go on the newspaper but his wee is the main problem, i take him outside when he wakes up from a sleep and after playing and eating but he seems to wee an awful lot sometimes he can wee 3 or 4 times in around half an hour although he only lets out small drops at a time, when he goes outside after waking he really lets a load of wee out then. The last couple of days we have gone onto just using newspaper because he was starting to play with the pads and tear them up, he rips the newspaper up aswell and generally plays with it but i assume all puppies do this, he will wander around the room with a sheet and then lay down and rip it to bits. I feel he needs newspaper out there as when we are not around to get him outside he has got somewhere to go to toilet instead of doing it on the floor. At night we put Hamish into a babies playpen and he is brilliant he only barks at first and then we do not hear him at all until around 7 am the following morning, sometimes he waits until he comes out to pooh but a couple of mornings he has messed in the pen but he cannot help this overnight.
Can anybody suggest anything else i can try to help train him to go out to wee, at the moment i have got paper by the back door in the conservatory and by the back door into the kitchen, we have got a baby gate up to stop him coming into the kitchen but he still comes and wee's by the kitchen door, i don't know how i am going to get this piece of paper from the kitchen door back to the conservatory door so that he is near the garden. I didn't want to put a piece by this door into the kitchen but he was weeing so much by here that i had no choice in the end.
Hope somebody can help, i have no experience of puppies as this is our first ever dog.

Hello helen,

Congrats on your new baby :)

Have you thought maybe he might have a little infection if he is peeing more than you think normal and especially if he is doing tiny bits at a time. Might be worth a sample to the vets to check it out.

I would also suggest stop using the wee wee pads, they often cause more problems than they solve. Also make sure that you clean up all accidents with a cleaner that is specific for animals and not a household one. The household ones contain ammonia, which encourages the dogs to re-use that area. Try your local petshop for a specialist odour remover and check our the link that the other poster (sorry forgot who it was :) ).

Good luck and have fun with your pup.

Hi All

Yes i have asked the vet and he said that a lot of puppies let out small amounts of wee especially when they get excited, he went this week for his jab and he checked him over and said he was fine. We have left off the puppy pads and have gone back to just paper today but he wrips this up especially when he has his funny five minutes he just runs around with it in his mouth and then lays there wripping it up, i am not sure whether all pups do this but Hamish definitely does. We are wiping the area with simple solution disinfectant but i am wondering whether this is tempting him back there more than it should be, i am thinking about using the white vinegar that somebody else suggested on another post about housetraining.
I am not sure whether i should just have paper by the conservatory door leading out into the garden but as he was weeing by the other end of the conservatory where there is a door leading into the kitchen i added a piece there, i am wondering how i am going to get nearer to the door leading into the garden though as he seems to use the kitchen door end more than the door that leads into the garden, it is just unfortunate we have got 2 doors in our conservatory that i think is confusing him a bit. Any ideas i would be very grateful.
Thanks
Helen
