How long would you wait before getting your bitch spayed if she has never had a season? My poodle Tala has deformed 'bits' and todate has not had a season. She is now nearly 17 months old. I was thinking of waiting til she is 2 before having her done (beginning to think she probably isn't properly equipped anyway). What would everyone else do?

I had my bitch spayed at 16 months with no problems at all :)

If "the bits" are not connected you could be running into trouble if you don't spay Bec. I think after 17 months I would be thinking about not waiting much longer. Certainly it would pay to get veterinary advice before too long. Hope it goes well for you.
Best wishes, John

Hi Bec,
I would have a scan done to see if there is anything strange looking inside and if not, would keep an eye on her and wait until she is about 2 years old. One of our beardies didn't come in season until 14 months old (she was a very immature bitch and still is now), every season after that has been approx. every 7-8 months with no problems at all.
What were her parents like for seasons, sometimes late seasons run in the family, a friend of ours breeds Shelties and one of her bitches didn't come into season until she was about 19-20 months old and has huge gaps between her seasons still now.

Hi Bec,
Holly had 2 false seasons at 6mths and then again at 12mths (all the signs of being in season but no blood) and has just had her first proper season at 15mths.
If she hadn't have had this proper season we were going to have her spayed next month at the suggestion of the vet. Her coat was always very dry and she showed other signs of having a hormonal imbalance. When she came into season we were advised by the vet to let her have two full seasons and then to have her spayed. After her little perfomance with Issy the other day she's booked in to be spayed in June.
If Tala was mine I'd have her spayed as soon as possible - is there any way that the vet can perform an Ultrasound to check the levels of the lining of the uterus (assuming she has one of course). That way both you and the vet would be a lot happier about the timing of the spay.
Will it affect her coat at all? I'm assuming she's your lovely long coated poodle, will it dry her coat out at all having her spayed?
See you soon,
Fiona

I think I'll take her for a scan to see what the vet says. I did get the vet to check her when I first got her and apart from the obvious problem couldn't find anything else wrong but she was very tiny then so think a scan is sensible.
Yes Fiona Tala was the hairy beast you saw but she isn't long coated any more, gave her an all over trim the other day as she gets very hot and panty. She loves her new 'hair do' though and is a very happy bunny now.
I'll let you all know what the vet says and what we find. Thanks to all :D
