Topic Dog Boards / General / Who/What is the DLC???
- By SpeedsMum [gb] Date 28.04.03 14:12 UTC
Lately i've seen several advertisements in the free ads papers for litters of all kinds of breeds, and they make a big deal out of their pups being "DLC registered". Saw it mentioned on another thread and now i'm really curious as to who/what they are??? Are they anything to do with the KC?

DLC stands for Dog Lovers Club, which means absolutely nothing, and has nothing whatsoever to do with the Kennel Club!

Basically, people can make up any 'facts' about a dog's parentage that they want, and the DLC will send them a printed certificate with these details on it. No verification or anything. The parent dogs don't even have to be of the same breed.

It seems to be that if the pups are 'Registered' then they can be sold for more money, and for your extra £100 you get a worthless piece of paper.

Interesting. I thought I would find out more by doing a tentative enquiry and have had a response from the DLC indicating that it is the reponsibilty of the breeder owner to give accurate information as as soon as it is issued then it becomes a legal document and if any information is found to be inaccurate then the owner, breeder could face prosecution. They have said because of the number of people now using them instead of other places ie KC due to 'competative pricing and speed' then they would more or less be able to tell if the information is incorrect due to the amount of dogs they now have on their database. How can that work then when you have different registration databases???? A money making enterprise rather than a controlled and properly managed and monitored registration set up ??

I was kindly given a "pedigree certificate" by someone who has bought a westie that is DLR and it looks quite good to someone who knows nothing about the lines of the pedigree, but to me, lots of spelling mistakes in the names, so really a worthless piece of paper that means nothing. And an affix that is no longer in existence!!!!!!!

We went to look at a litter that was DLC registered and quite frankly altho they look fine, for the same ammount you can have a registered KC pup, with health certificates, breed guarantees etc..its really not worth buying a DLC reg pup.

We were told that the DLC reg was for people that were not interested in showing their new pup, but you can have a KC reg one and not show him too!

Search around and find a good KC reg pup. You can be sure of his breeding and quality as the breed you are buying :)
