Hello
We have a question about Dobermanns.
We have a 4 year old neutered Dobermann who is lovely. He gets on well with other neutered dogs and bitches, but can be grumpy with entire males.
We would like to have another dog (male dobe puppy) but are interested to know if anyone has any experience with having two male dobe's. We would have the puppy neutered after puperty. We do not want a bitch due to spaying and then becoming a "leaky bitch". Can anyone give any information on whether it is or is not a good idea to have another dog.

Hi Guest,

Under no circumstances could I advise that you get another male Dobe - neutered or not. Two males equal very large vet bills amongst other things, especially as your boy is grumpy with other males already.

Not all spayed bitches leak, some do some don't, just as some entire bitches leak (and dogs).

Take your male where there are as many other dogs milling around as possible - exemption shows are ideal as then he will be amongst so many other dogs that he won't know where to grumble first and you will have lots of opportunities to correct him.

With many breeds it is safe to keep two males - Dobermanns are not one of them unless:

- you have totally separate areas that can be divided off with an "airlock" between them
- everyone that comes to, or lives in your home can be trusted to keep the doors separating the dogs apart
- you have the time and energy to do two lots of exercise each time with the dogs
