hi
my friend has a cavalier and all the dog does is bark especially out in the garden. She has had lots of complaints from the neigbours and also her family are getting fed up with the dog. The dog is 2 years old and my friend has tried all sorts of things to stop the dog barking. She was told about an operation the dog could have on its voice box is this possible?
Any advice would be great.
Thanks

If you're in the UK, I believe this operation is illegal. It is unethical because it is of no benefit to the dog.

What have they done to stop the dog barking?

Why is the dog barking? Is it bored? Then do more things with it, play with it, take it for walks, train it. Does it want to come in? Let it in. It's no good just stopping the barking if that is a symptom of something else. If it can't bark, it will find another way of relieving its stress.

They are going to have to start rewarding the dog when it is quiet. This will take a lot of concentration on their part, but the more effort they put in, the quicker will be the result. Make the dog sit quietly for its dinner. Don't give it any treats if it is barking. Don't even scold it when it is barking, because that can be seen as attention = reward.
