Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Mad 5 minutes

Well, Dylan has now been with me for a week and he will be 9 weeks old tomorrow. For the last few days, he has started having a 'mad' 5 minutes where he tears around the room and tries to grab my clothes or hands with his teeth. The rest of the time, he is very calm and his teeth don't touch me at all. It seems to be increasing to a mad 10 minutes. I guess this is perfectly normal puppy behaviour? Can I expect the time of this mad period to increase, or will it stop at a 10 minute session? Also, will it get better when I can take him out into the big wide world after his second jab?

Thanks,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
It could well build up to a mad half-hour as he gets older, but it's perfectly normal, absolutely harmless, and damn good fun!!!

If Dylan's a Stafford it will soon become a quiet 10 minutes and 23 hours 50 minutes of madness. ;)
But it's all good fun if things get to much lock yourself in the puppy crate :)

I love my pup's mad dash around the house - his facial expression says it all! The only thing is that the coffee table is only just higher than him so I'm in a mad dash also to try and protect his little head. Can you imagine what we both look like?

Very normal, I've heard it call a couple of things. A behaviorist I know called it FRAPping -- the FRAP stood for frenetic random activity periods. Whenever our lab did it, we just called it "puppy spurts."

At nearly 17 months , Hudson STILL does this ...he likes to think of the back garden and the living/dining room as a speedway track , with the patio doors and dining table as a sort of chicane. This is even MORE fun if there is a child/cat/mum or dad standing in the way  :D

Now this is fine ...except he still does it when the garden is muddy ...and then I get Malamute skidmarks (so to speak) in front of the sofa where he does a hairpin bend :D :D :D

Melody - Who hears that Hudsons Uncle STILL does the same thing at the grand old age of 6 or 7 :D :D :D

My other Staffords did the mad dash all their lives Sam right up until he was 16 and 1/2.

Oh I don;t think it's just dogs either my two cats do it to and they are 19 this June!!!!:) So plenty of time to get used to it.

Sarah, yes it's absolutely normal - with my puppy it rarely lasts longer than 5 minutes. I just get out of the way and watch - it's hysterical.

Were now building up into a mad half hour but usually its in the garden when plants and toys and anything else thats in the way or looks like it might attack get the brunt of the mobile teeth, and gets the living daylights shaken out of it. Fortunately fingers now seem less interesting. Doesn't half wear her out though:D

We have it in stereo in this house! :D We call it "Mad-Dog-Time". The cavaliers can be fast asleep, then one will wake up, go and poke the other on the head with it's paw, and bark.
Then it's manic for about 20 minutes, ending with them rolling about "play-snarling" at each other, usually when I'm on the phone, or trying to watch TV!

Poppy is 15 months and Saffy is 7 months.....we bought a kids' play tunnel for them to add to their "race track" thro' the conservatory, kitchen, dining room and lounge.

It's just brilliant seeing them having fun!! Enjoy it!!

my three labs all do it, and it's usually started by my 6 year old poppy.they run around the garden and in through the kitchen and then jump on the sofa.my garden looks like a race track but it's a right laugh seeing them enjoying themselves.i'm getting my new choc bitch amber next week so it will be interesting to see if she does it too.
