Does anybody else have a problem with their dogs not liking to go out in the rain.My eldest(3yrs) will go into the garden for a quick wee then will be right back on the doorstep waiting to be let in.My new pup(4 months) won't even venture into the garden if he sees rain,he'd rather go on the paper indoors. Is there a way around this at all, even if i go out and stand in the rain myself he will not come out.

If you're going to want him to go out when older you'll need to start carrying him out now into the rain whether he LIKES it or NOT. Most dogs don't like the rain. I've a whippet and whippet-mix who think it's ACID and will kill them - but they get kicked out. When they were pups they got carried out, plonked on the grass and TOLD to do their thing. They eventually got the idea that whatever happened they would stand in the rain till they did what they needed to do. They now go out, do it quick and race back in.

Our pup was the same so we had to pick him up and put him out in the rain , may also be a good idea to take the paper away so he knows he has to go outside , put the paper outside which is what we first did until oscar got the idea.

my 2 year old lab cries to go out for a wee, when i open the door and she sees rain she's looks at me like i'm going crazy.there is no way she'll go out in it.my other two don't seem to mind, but daisy thinks shes the queen!!

My 13 week old Dobie hates the rain as well, he'd never seen if before and sat outside shivering and whimpering when I took him out. I stood outside in the dark like a complete idiot whispering "toilet toilet" my words falling on deaf ears. Yet I took him for a walk and it didn’t rain any more that that night and he happily scampered about.

Mut's hey who'd have em.

Hi Jacky

Didn't you know - most Dobermanns melt in the rain ?!?!?!?!

I do have two out in it at the moment though - one is under the trees playing with his ball and the other is sitting in the middle of the paddock watching the geese and does not even seem to have noticed it is raining.

LOL @ Christine.. I have heard it whispered about Hubby had two before Sydney and they were exactly the same I want to buy him a raincoat when he gets older . Do any of your Dobies have them? (Ill have to walk Sydney by myself if he has his coat on Hubby wouldnt be seen dead walking Syd in a mac. (grin)

Hi Jacky

The only time I use coats on my lot is if one is ill and I think s/he needs a bit more cossetting than usual. Wet dogs may smell horrible but it makes their coats feel lovely once dry

Towelling a dog that's been rained on (rather than bathed) does a terrific grooming job! Clouds and clouds of hair!

Once my lot are out in the rain they're fine - it's the going out they hate (dalmatians dissolve, too ;) ) I've only used coats at draughty shows, and for elderly dogs who can't keep themselves warm properly.

My pup Gus is the same - he looks up at the rain and then back to me as though to say " I dont think so thankyou" . He has this little look as though I am quite stupid !! :D

Your Dalmations may be worried their spots are going to run!

Carry them somewhere and make them walk back, my whippets hate it too. Walk, out, squat, straight back. Theyre very good, sweeties are whippets.

My 12 week old pup didn't know what to think of the rain at first but he doesn't seem to mind it now. We've been going into the garden often in the 2 weeks he's been here so it's still the "usual" thing to do whether its raining or not. He loves to be out there which helps I guess. I have a toy I keep out there for him - which means gardentime is funtime!

I've never managed yet to get any of my dobes out in the rain. A light drizzle and they are reluctant to say the least, anything heavier not a chance. I'm sure Jaffa would poke her paw out the door if it got wet, that was it no way was she going out, she could hold her bladder for 12 hours easy. I remember once when she was a pup hubby tried to walk her in the rain, he dragged her half way down the road and she stopped and wouldn't budge until he gave up and returned and then she dragged him back home. Today Taz wandered out then realised it was raining and did her wee and rushed straight back in. Dobes out in the rain, no way:D

Our last dobe hated rain and would do anything to avoid going out in it.

Harry not keen either but today as we were laying flags in it (like mad fools) he watched and got a little damp before going inside.

When my oldest child was little I used to walk him and our dog to the school (a long haired breed, he hated rain). One day on the way to school there was a sudden downpour and he just sat down! Wouldn't budge, no way. I had to leave him there in the middle of the lane while I took my little one to school. On my return he was still sitting there in the pouring rain :D it took a lot of convincing to get him to give up the only dry patch on earth to go home.
My present dog is no better, even if he's desperate to go out there's no chance if its raining, you can hear him screeching to a halt at the door and of course its my fault that its wet out there!!!!
- By majix [gb] Date 26.04.03 09:00 UTC
Charlie absolutely loathes the rain - steadfastly refuses to go out in it! He'll hold himself for hours, or if hes really desperate, he backs up to the conservatory door, hangs his bum out and wee's on the step :D

Now rolling in the mud once the rain has stopped, that a different matter altogether - think he enjoys a good mud pack ;)

My 4 month old mini schnauzer doesn't like the rain (neither do I). I have to go out with him and shut the door behind us - but whatever the weather I will get him outside. If you have taught him a command word associated with going then after hearing it, he normally realises it is in his interests to go sooner rather than later. I think he is getting more used to it now because on nicer days, when we water the plants in the garden he normally gets a good soaking too. Keep persevering.

well its pouring here as I speak & looking out of the window there are 2 hounds lying in the rain asleep!!! Mind you the pups have all taken themselves indoors!
- By Sandie [gb] Date 26.04.03 10:17 UTC
I wish my lot hated the rain it would make my life so much easier, they love it infact the heavier the better and always enjoy a game of tig when its at it worst so they are covered in mud.
Someone said springers dont get their brain until they are about 14 and I think that is so true.

My BSD is OK with rain but preferably if we are doing a walk or playing - if we are playing then an earthquake probably wouldn't shift her in a scaredy way

She isn't keen and puts her ears right back, but then I have a different routine with her than with my first 2 BSDs who I used to have to walk in all weathers. They just didn't give a fig, and some of my best memories are walks in the sodden dripping rain in the Forest with no-one else for miles around ;)

I think it is what a dog is used to as much as anything.

My older dog loves the rain - he charges around like a maniac and digs frantically in the paths in the field (the ONLY time that he digs anywhere) - he is the same if it is very windy :D

Mines the same - he loves the rain as it makes the ground easier to dig. I also love walking him in a downpour as I get the usual dog walks to myself (lot of fair-weather dog walkers around here!)
- By Daisy [gb] Date 26.04.03 13:07 UTC
I love walking in the rain as well - as long as I am dressed accordingly :) When I was working a longer day and just came home at lunch time to walk the dog, sometimes I didn't have time to change and walking in a field with a longish skirt, welly boots and a two sizes too big Musto coat looks really good :) I'd often go back to work with the bottom half of my skirt soaked :)

Well, i took Tyson out last night when it was raining and although he didn't do any business he stayed out there for a while and sniffed about and lapped up some of the puddles-so thats progress i suppose!!
