Discovered that you can get a spray which (apparently) is attractive to puppies and encourages them to toilet in a particular place in the garden. Just wondered whether anyone had used this, and whether it worked? (or is it the doggie equivalent of "take this pill and watch the weight fall off" ...)

I would think anything with a spot of ammonia in it could work.

I used a spray like this when puppy's goldfish memory forgot what going outside meant for a few days. This was during his pre-vaccination period when one tends to look to alleviate the stress of toilet training by trying all the quick fixes.
The spray contains pheremones - sorry can't remember the name. It worked the first couple of sprays in that there was an instant wee but after that it was no use at all and I went back to nature and perseverance.
I am not too keen on it- it honked worse than the wee and my limited grass area was totally wrecked by it [the wee of couse did some damage but the spray was by far the worse culprit].
The smell also lingered - especially in the heat of last summer.
Incidentally the puppy training pads were also a waste of money but I think I knew that at the time - it is so tempting to buy up everything for the Bubs at the pet shop but I am now turning into my own Mum and being much more sensible.

I agree with Cissy you can go out and buy everything under the sun for your pup, but how much of it really works? We were given one of those puppy pads when we first went to the vet for a check up (same day we got him). But decided that we would use newspaper instead of the pads. Firstly newspaper is free and those pads are really expensive, and I couldnt cover my floor with puppy pads until Syd got the hang of using the pads. I have now given up on newspaper as I started to cover less of the floor as the days/weeks went by. Sometimes he hit the paper sometimes not. Now I dont use anything, (thankfully we have lino in the kitchen) and most nights/days he is clean.

Jo I dont think you will have any worries with your dobie pup they are very intelligent (regardless of what my other posts say in other discussions) and will catch on about toileting outside very quick without the help of any sprays.

PS If you want to spend money start stocking up on tins of puppy food now. I bought all of the stock from the shelf at asda's yesterday, that should last him a few days. (I wistfully look at my very slimline wallet now.. dawgs and they said that horse lovers were paupers... guess they never owned a dobie pup before)

PS Cissy I loved the goldfish reference. Im sure that Sydney has a pea for a brain sometimes. Infact I think my gerbils have a bigger brain than him.

:D I used to keep goldfish too - and confirm they have puppies' brains. Poo everywhere - but I'd still rather clean up after a puppy!
