Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Why the sofa?
- By sandy salisbury [gb] Date 23.04.03 20:57 UTC
My 14 week old Gordon Setter appears to be house trained - she asks to be let out and responds to 'do a poo!' She has no problems going through the night BUT....... She is allowed to sit on an old sofa in my computer room but not on any other furniture. Three times now she has peed on the sofa apparently when asleep. Why? Also what is the best way to get rid of any lingering smell that might tempt her to do it again? Do I ban her from the sofa? I admit I got angry the last time and she slunk off to sleep in her den -oops

Hi
I have no idea why she is doing this but what I can say is wash the chair down with biological washing powder , it really does do the trick . I suppose the first time could of been an accident and now the scent is still there she will keep on going on there until its gone. Also when shes on the chair and she wakes take her straight off too her toilet place and praise when she goes .
Good luck

If she is actually asleep when she does it, it's perhaps a bit like children whowet the bed and not her fault. She is only young. If she continues to do this, it may be worth having a word with your vet as there may be a medical problem.

Best wishes

I cant suggest anything for your pup problem, but Odorkill will get rid of that smell and also keep it fresh. It was suggested to me and i love it. It kills smells and gets rid of stains, its about 8 pounds for a liter and you dilute it. www.animal-health.co.uk have it.

Hope that helps the smell situation :)

Hi Sandy :)

Another thing you could do in the meantime to protect your sofa, is to get one of the childs matress protectors and put it around the bottom cushion/cushions, then use an old throw or blanket to cover that.
At least it will protect your sofa until this problem sorts itself out.

Sandy,

This is similar to what our Gordon did when she was the same age. It was really strange because they are supposed to be such clean dogs. She hoped onto the sofa one day looked at my husband and pee'd!!!! I must admit she was told off severely and sofa priveledges were removed for a few weeks. She went onto do it only once more (told off and not allowed on the sofa for a few more weeks!) and then never again.

I'm not sure if she was marking her territory in some way but she has been told off and seems to have learnt her lesson.

Is your Gordon a bitch? Maybe this is a girlie thing!!!!

Good luck

Yes Heidi, she is a bitch. We'll try the ban for a few weeks and try and ignore the appealing looks. Thank you all for the help. I guess I'll try the detergent first, it's cheaper!
