Topic Dog Boards / Health / Skin Cancer in Cocker
- By guest [gb] Date 03.03.03 18:51 UTC
My 14 year old cocker spaniel has been diagnosed with skin cancer - Epitheliotrophic Lymphoma. The vets can't offer me a lot of information on the illness and the internet doesn't offer much which I can understand. I would appreciate hearing from any one whose dog has suffered or is suffering from this, any advice would gladly received.

Many thanks

Pam - thanks a lot for your reply. Have now given up on searching the internet, dosen't make for good reading. On the plus side, Holly is now 14 years and 8 months and despite have the cancer ( which seems to be just like heavy dandruff) she is in remarkable good health. Has a good (if not too good) appetite and still likes to play and bark at the post man. I lost her sister, Parsley, who was only just eleven years old, who died of stomach cancer, so I feel like the past 4 years have been a bonus. Holly & Parsley were from the same litter, but Parsley was always the 'sick' one.

Who(or what) are the boys ?

Regards, Jan

Jan - glad to Hear Holly is well in herself. She is a good age for a Cocker:-)

My "boys" are cockers:D Jasper(blue roan) almost 3 and Buddy (Orange roan)almost 2.

My cats got a kind of skin cancer frm the sun on their white tips, ears for one, nose for the other. The only treatment for their kind was surgery so one ended up losing her ears - bless, but they couldn't do anything for the cancer on the nose. Both lived with it for a good few years and left us when the quality of life was not would it should be. My little girl with the cancer on her ears actually fell victim to feline leukeamia so it wasn't even the cancer that took her from us.

I hope Holly continues for a goodly while yet. Enjoy the time you have with her:D

Pam - I envy you having two young Cockers, now they are over the terrible teens !! Holly and Parsley drove me completey mad up until the age of two. I though it was a good idea having kennel mates as I worked full time and I though they would be company for each other. But, when one was being good the other was being naughty - and I am sure they led each other on. I hate now only having one dog, as Holly and Parsley were never seperated up until Parsley died, Holly seemed to miss her for about 3 months. As they came as a pair, and I was known it the Village as 'Jan and the Girls', I have found the last four years quite sad. I have said after Holly, never again. but then the thought of a puppy ... well I'm sure you know the rest. I like the Orange Roan, my cockers were (are) Blue Roan, but quite big bitches. The Orange Roans always seem a lot smaller. Given the chance, I am sure I would have one of each colour.

Sorry to hear about your Cats, do you still have any. Wishing Japser & Buddy and long and healthy life.

Pam - just to let you know that Holly died on Sunday. As well as the skin cancer, she also had both liver and kidney disease, ehich eventually got to her.
