Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bitch in whelp with a broken leg

Hello everyone! I'm brand new to this forum! I'm a bit concerned about one of my bitches and this seems like a great place to ask for advice.
I breed italian greyhounds, and one of my bitches, who was mated 30 days ago, just broke a leg this last weekend. All of my dogs are show quality and completely health checked before mating. They have nice champion lines in their pedigrees, and each breeding is very carefully planned in advance. This girl is 5 years old, and this is her first litter. She is most probably in whelp, and as I mentioned she just broke her front leg because of a bad step in which her leg slipped and caused the fracture. She's wearing a cast and she seems pretty well after all. The vet is telling me to give her calcium in order to aid in the healing of her leg, but I know I'm not supposed to give any calcium before birth, to avoid the risk of eclampsia. What do you suggest? Should I wait 'till she has her pups? She's eating puppy food (kibble/tin).
I also know I have the risk of losing the pups because although she is a really brave girl, she surely got a bit stressed with all the procedure, but still she's behaving calm and normal, she's eating very well, and I haven't noticed anything different since the accident happen. Should I still worry about her losing her litter? (I know, I'm always worried about this, since one of my bitches reabsorbed a litter 3 years ago!)
Thank you very much!

Hi

One of my bitches slipped last year whilst pregnant and damaged her knee and also her cruiate ligament. She managed her pregnancy, whelping and care of her pups on three legs, with a lot of love.
She was not a good mother and of course this was probably due to her being uncomfortable.
At the end of the day your bitch is the most important. Good luck.

:) Thank you for your reply! I'm already prepared to give her all the help she might need. And she still has another month to get used to the cast. By now she already seems to be doing just fine!!! I'll let you know!
