my bitch was due in season about a month back. my male dog has been a little interested for a couple of weeks but she is showing no real physical signs. someone says it could be a 'silent season' what is this and how can you tell?

Normally this means no sign of bleeding, sometimes no swelling either. If she is swollen then she could be in season. A bitch with Pyometra will smellattractive to some males, as will one with some metabolic diseases. I would take her to the vet. A blood test can be done which can determine if she has ovulated recently.

Maybe your bitch hasnt come into her real season yet.
I can always tell when our bitchs are due in as our dog is constantly sniffing them even though there is no sign.
Bitchs are not always regular with their seasons.
