You can dowload the Pop-Up Killer that I use and this gives you the option of killing any , some or all pop ups on sites that you visit. You can d/l it here : Pop-Up Killer

As to Outlook Express ..are these normal pop ups or do they appear to be a small grey window with writing on? If they are the latter then you have a port on your PC open and available to be targeted.

Is it safe, Melody? I'm always very nervous about downloading anything, just in case.....!
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 21.04.03 09:03 UTC
Are you serious?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 21.04.03 09:05 UTC
:o Yes, I'm afraid so! :o I'm a coward, I confess.

Not that I think you'd suggest anything risky for my computer, don't think I'm suggesting that....but how can you tell if things are genuine or not?

:)
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 21.04.03 09:08 UTC
JG , I would never give out an URL of a download to anyone if there was any risk to someones computer. Its all very well being safe , but if you can't trust your friends then there is summat wrong somewhere ;)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 21.04.03 09:09 UTC
I know, please, don't be offended, I don't mean that at all. I'm just a Luddite who's only recently come to terms with the 20th Century...then it changed, so I'm struggling again. :)
- By Carla Date 21.04.03 09:05 UTC
Hi J/G - yep, its perfectly safe. I don't think Mel would be downloading anything that wasn't :)

In fact, its better than safe - its blissful not having to look at and close down pop ups. Download away!
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 21.04.03 09:08 UTC
Chloe , it was you that I emailed the url to before wasn't it? :D

Melody :) - Pop up free for 3 months now ;)
- By Carla Date 21.04.03 09:16 UTC
Yeah - its good. I like it that you can ban pop ups forever from certain sites, like my bank who use a really annoying one... It also works well with ad-aware as you say.

Melody - I have reccently started getting those grey ones, and I thought it was something to do with having downloaded MSN messenger. I have searched my PC to find where it is saved so that I can delete it, I don't use it, but can't find it :(

Would you happen to know how to stop the grey ones, oh wise and knowledgeble one :)
- By Christine Date 21.04.03 09:47 UTC
Thanks Mel, I`m going to download it now. :) I`ve never been bothered by the pop ups since the men unistalled evrything a while back but yesterday I was nosing round & they started coming back! Not for long tho eh :D

Hi,
How do you close the port that's causing the grey pop-ups???? Thanks,Beth.x
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 21.04.03 11:22 UTC
Beth and Reefer ..these are a new thing that has been recently developed ..I have set Hubby on to finding out how to stop them (He is the All Knowing One ;) ) ...in the meantime , a firewall should go some way to stopping them

Melody :)
- By EDDY [gb] Date 21.04.03 12:27 UTC
that's spooky - i often get the grey pop-ups and just close them because i don't know what to do. anyway, just decided to try looking in search/help after reading this topic and a pop-up popped-up saying that my p/c is at risk because a port is open. i'll hang on to hear what the 'all knowing one' finds out. your help and advice is much appreciated melody.

Val , do you have a firewall? I think that is the safest bet for the time being ....as we are networked in my house (4 PCs  ) we have to fork out lotsa dosh for a networking Firwall ..but if you are on a single PC you can download one free on the 'net , just visit Tucows or Google :)

Thanks.
i tried downloading it but still got the pop ups (not grey ones) When I came back to CD and tried your link again it literally made a 'pop'noise and would not connect to it. Guess I did something wrong!!!!!!!!!!!:(

LOL ..it asks you if you want to allow a site to pop up or not ..at some point you have said NO! to Champdogs ..it can't decide on its own ;) I suggest reading the help section first then playing with it ;) You can always open the programme up and remove a site from the banned site section :)

never heard of 'firewall' but will look into it. thanks for help
- By Admin (Administrator) Date 21.04.03 15:03 UTC
Try Zonealarm. There is a free firewall download available on the righthand side of the homepage
- By Reefer [gb] Date 21.04.03 16:06 UTC
Thanks admin well I have downloaded it, actually it's quite scarey, I've already been invaded once and it blocked it, sometimes I think ignorance is bliss
- By EDDY [gb] Date 22.04.03 07:47 UTC
thanks - yes i've downloaded it now too. nothing has popped up yet but i'll catch the little monkey if it does !!

To some degree ignorance is bliss... ;) I was unaware of people trying to access my computer until l installed "Norton Firewall", now it lists how many attacks, how recent the attacks and by which route they attempted to access my computer  On two occasions I have been warned someone was trying to access my bank account details!
But a "Firewall" is a must, it works brilliantly, if you are hell bent on finding out who is "hacking" into your computer you can trace their "IP" addresses.

Zone Alarm is awful Admin :( I had no end of problems on my pc with it. I use a free firewall now from Agnitum Outpost and find it's much better :)

Nice to hear someone else had problems with Zone Alarm, it sent my PC haywire, & guess what Lara I to use Outpost now.

Thank you for that tip Lara. I will check it out :-)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 22.04.03 11:59 UTC
Please let us know the final decision - what should I upload/download/side-to-side load? ;)
- By Admin (Administrator) Date 22.04.03 12:08 UTC
I think it all depends on your operating system JG. I have run zonealarm alongside other AVP and had no problems. Give one a try and see how you get on. If it does not suit you, try the other :-)
- By EDDY [gb] Date 24.04.03 11:03 UTC
